As you mentioned, you can indeeed also use the "insert image" button above ^^^ and put the copied image url in between the brackets of (img) picture url (/img). I used parenthesis in the example but you will need to use brackets for it to work properly.
Doing it this way allows you to place the photo anywhere you want in the post:

So there are a couple random pictures found from google to demonstrate the technique. To do this with your own photos, you would have to upload them somewhere on the NET first and then copy the image url.
As for where to upload your pics first:
https://imgur.com/ is a decent place and it is free.
Lastly, it is important to note that some cameras, especially cell phones, often contain ways to track where the photo was taken through Geotracking or .EXIF data. To fix this, open your image in Paint and save it as a .BMP image. Then open the BMP image and save it as a .JPEG. Doing this strips the photo of its .exif data. Then you can proceed to upload wherever.
