So I got a used smartphone as a gift and now i'm looking into all the different interesting Android apps available. While I see the negative unsustainable part of consumerism in ppl buying new phones regularly and the annoying part of ppl hiding behind their phones being antisocial, im def gonna avoid that and try to b conscious of my use and also avoid buying new phones. But if we can overcome those issues, its quite a fascinating universe with a lot of innovative potential.

What cool apps do u use?

Spmeone here mentioned an app that tracks sleep phases, do u know the name? What others are worth getting?

Good quality Syrian rue (Peganum harmala) for an incredible price!

Just a heads up, but there are a lot of apps that contain malware and steal data from your phone. I never use apps on mine.

Here's an interesting article worth reading. http://www.cyberdefensem...ing-on-you-did-you-know/

Thanks for the heads up, definitely relevant.

I def think its important to be wary of such things. By default I had already disabled GPS and bluetooth, always deny permission for websites to use my location, etc, and am careful with apps I apply, revising their permissions and terms of use.

That being said, my actions are less out of fear and more out of principle, to avoid giving unnecessary personal information to those that don't need it or that I don't trust. I am not very paranoid because I live a law-abiding life in a country where drug use is not criminalized... For those that live in very repressive contexts, I'd be wary of even having a smartphone at all, or at least not mix personal info and daily-use devices with legally-liable information and discussions.

Not an app but an Android OS: CyanogenMod

supported devices: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Devices#vendor=;
Unofficial Ports: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Unofficial_Ports

Quote:
Why Mod?

* Remove unwanted programs ("bloatware") installed by your carrier
* Receive more frequent security updates
* Have access to the current version of Android - most carriers take months to update devices on their network to the latest version of Android, if ever. Taking control of your OS allows you to update regularly, when you feel like it's time.
* Better performance
* Extra features
* Privacy Guard: Control what your applications can learn about you and your contacts. Protect yourself with a simple click, or long press an app to delve deep.
....
etc.
