I want to do a experiment in grafting pachanoi on opuntia. I haven't seen this before so i ask if some of you know or even did this on your grafting stock.

Is it possible to cut a rib longitudinal from a pachanoi and stick it to a opuntia? To better explain myself i made a drawing.

Is is necessary that the pachanoi portion has the core too? Or is it enough that the rib contains areoles? I ask this because i now it is possible to graft areoles.. so no central woody section is necessary. Or is it? I never saw this being attempted but in theory it might be possible.

Hi DiMiTriX, i attach some pics for you to see how i am trying to graft areoles on a opuntia pad. I am no specialist it is also my second time i'm grafting something.. but practice makes perfect so they say.

What i gave attention to, was that the areoles should be on top of the center and also on top of the more greenish border. The same applies for your seedlings.

The first pic is Trichocereus Bridgesii Monstrose areoles grafted on opuntia pad.
The second pic is Trichocereus Pachanoi Crest showing the rib i removed.
The third pic is Trichocereus Pachanoi Crest areoles grafted on opuntia pad.

Tomorrow or so i will attempt to make a longer pachanoi rib grafted on opuntia like i pictured in the first post of this thread.

These are the grafts i did today. Lets see what comes out. The other grafts i did with the aeroles don't look promising. They dryed out, i have a very hot and dry summer now..

But maybe with ribs i will have some success.

Just a little update on my grafting experiment. Some grafts didn't make it, the ones that were too small. But the ribs idea is fantastic. Two pups are showing up in one pad and the other ones look promising too. Yey

very cool!
you may end up wishing you had scalloped back the edge of the opuntia over time. as the flesh shrinks...
