I know that this may be an inflammatory topic, but I trust the Nexians to treat it with respect.

A question that's been bugging me for a while is if there have been any correlations shown between incidences of religiosity and antipsychotic medication. If I had to guess, I would hypothesize that people taking antipsychotic medication (especially atypical antipsychotics that antagonize serotonin receptors in addition to dopamine receptors), would be less prone to showing some kind of powerful, religious faith.

I in no way intend to imply that anyone has been 'cured' of their religious faith or that religion is merely a delusion to be medicated away. I'm thinking about the neuroscience of the issue.

My reasoning for this is that psychedelics (which agonize serotonin receptors instead of antagonizing them) will often cause psychotic or schizophrenic-like symptoms to manifest (for a long time, LSD was used to induce a temporary, schizophrenic-like state to study the disorder), in addition to the now well-known spiritual and religious experiences that users will experience.

It makes sense to me that, if powerful activation of serotonin receptors can precipitate abstract, ineffable religious experiences, then antagonizing them would make such things impossible.
What I don't know, is if the more mundane day-to-day faith that a lot of people have would be effected. Experiences reports I've read of people who have abused antipsychotics (WTF? Why?) all have a common theme that the user didn't feel *anything,* merely that they existed in a sort of vacuum.
Again, my pet theory is that users on antipsychotics might continue to go to services/church/mosque/whatever, but they would find that whatever spark they experiences while at prayer or devotion was gone.

Of course, I am neither spiritual, nor on an antipsychotic, so I can't say for certain. Does anyone have anything they can add to this?

Blessings
