Sorry if anyone's already asked this, but: Is there a disaster just before every US presidential election? (Iran-contra, Gulf War I etc etc, now the cyclone)

Let's not slip anything that could sound conpiracy-ish into this thread. Toadfreak!

This thread is about the US election and US politics; it's not about religion. Please keep on topic here and start a new thread for religious discussions if you feel it's called for. Thank You

You know there are more than two parties and I voted for Jill Stein of the Green Party. I didn't throw my vote away either. I strongly feel that if I'm going to seriously vote for someone than I need to consider all the candidates and vote for the person that MOST represents my ideals and beliefs. Now, to be totally honest, I can't say I'm not happy to see Romney lose! Its the MeICNU

It's pretty sad how money seems to matter so much more than the will of the people. I heard a stat on NPR yesterday that 56 dollars were spent per voter in Washington. This money was from the various campaigns. $56!! And that's only our little state. I'd have rather that money go to something useful, in stead of attack ads and shit tons of junk mail. You'd better believe these big companies get their way, with money like that. That's all this country seems to care about, who's got more money, not who has the moral high ground. Monsanto is probably one of the worst. Dicks. Rant complete. Be an adult only when necessary.

That is what I believe the only way to have a system that is pro all of us not just pro few. Some building are irreparable and they have to be put down so a new and modern , properly functioning can be build. I think that you´re no realy open to the good there is in society. I would realy suggest to try to look at the bright side of things. It isn´t all bad. Definately not fundamentally bad. Most of all of the structures are actually there for a good reason. We have laws, for instance, to protect us. Would you rather want to live in a society with no laws, where people could get away with rape or murder? No ofcourse you wouldn´t. And we have a justice system that aims at fairness, even though it fails every now and then. But would you rather want to live in a place where a fair trial isn´t even on the menu? No, ofcourse you wouldn´t. So there are some things that ain´t working so well. So western society has been a little complacent, putting it´s head in the sand like an ostriche, for a bit too long. Enough reasons to be angry. But don´t let this anger blind you. There´s never gonna be any society where everything is perfect. Different people with different needs and interests have to share a planet with eachother, so it is inevitable that compromises would have to be made. There are always, in every system, going to be winners and losers. Even in the most egalitarian society´s in the world, there are winners and losers. No matter what rule you´d install, there are always going to be some people who´ll benefit more than others. That doesn´t make those people evil by definition. Also to speak of 'the elites' as if it´s a single group of people with all the same interests, is just oversimplifying things. There is no unitary elite that pulls all the strings. Not all people in power are bad, not all bankers are greedy. You´re not doing yourself or anybody else a favor by oversimplifying the world like that or by locking yourself up in negativity towards all of the world. Things are changing over time. They´ve just legalised cannabis in two american states.

The way I see it US Presidential elections are only held to give the population the feeling that they are in ultimate control. Who was a better choice Obama or Romney? The answer is neither. They have no real power and only serve as figureheads. It doesn't make a bit of difference they are only spokespersons speaking on behalf of those who bought and paid for them. You are not the one that got them into their office. The sponsors accomplished that. Thusly they owe their loyalty to those sponsors. If you don't sin, Jesus died for nothing.

The truth is there are enormous differences in their proposed policies and overall approach to governance, and that the ramifications of which one of these candidates won was (and is) huge to the entire populace. You're such a revolutionary, Vovin, with your pirated textbooks, links to campaign reform and humorless Che Guevarra looking photo. But did you vote? Are you even registered? Were you aware of the policies of either guy?

I do not preach really I only say how I feel about things. I do not claim that what I say a ultimate true. Obviously you have different opinion but that is ok I respect that. By the way exactly 40 years ago today a great person with biggest heart on earth gave birth to me I'm fine with being a sheep, cause this here sheep is allowed to be insured by his sheep parent's healthcare, which is GREAT insurance, until this here sheep turns 26, thanks to Obama and his administration. 'Murrrica Humor aside, does being a cynical and anti progressive "hippie" help things at all? Do you just idly stand by and watch the world crumble because you can't accept the fact that big corporations have a huge influence in the western world and politics? With economies you're going to have lobbying, sure, it's terrible, but slowly things really are changing. It hasn't been very long since segregation was abolished, and states are starting to wake up and recognize that marijuana needs to be legalized, or at least, decriminalized, and that also homosexuals should have the same rights everyone else does. Rome wasn't built in one day, and the US is a very young nation, to simply state the obvious that politicians generally don't care about individuals, is almost a cop out in using any critical thought into trying to understand politics or the world we live in, it's a complete dodge. I'd rather see someone who is ultimately influenced by big business, corporations, and lobbyists, realize that the lower and middle class need social help and support for the nation to flourish, rather than his counterpart who stands for big corporation and does not care about improving poverty or fixing the back bone of the middle class, and greedily helps the rich get richer while he simultaneously fills his overseas bank accounts with money, destroys jobs, and runs the middle class and lower class further into the ground. But yeah, we're all sheep because we play "the money game", and the people who stand by idly just lamenting over the evilness of the Westernized world and it's money games, quietly sauntering around Babylon, shitting and pissing in a field and really not giving a fuck about anything except sheeping it up like to look across the fence line and yell at the other sheep that they're sheep. Pot calling the kettle black? Who's the sheep here, lol? “The most compelling insight of that day was that this awesome recall had been brought about by a fraction of a gram of a white solid, but that in no way whatsoever could it be argued that these memories had been contained within the white solid. Everything I had recognized came from the depths of my memory and my psyche. I understood that our entire universe is contained in the mind and the spirit. We may choose not to find access to it, we may even deny its existence, but it is indeed there inside us, and there are chemicals that can catalyze its availability.”

work smarter, not harder...that's the mantra I'm trying to live. Ironically, I try to work hard (perhaps it's my mexican roots?) but I'm also lazy. I also question authority often (you should too...it's patriotic, supposedly). you really have to look back at history to see that the railroad industry rigged the system when they gained equal representation as an invidividual entity. that's when you really lost your voice. Yet, in the end, after a couple of centuries of caring...I'm not sure of the progress--at least not the progress that was truly GENERATED by government: civil rights and equality were something that had to be BEGGED FOR from government for DECADES before they could be achieved. OTOH, Nuclear weapons, constant war, permanent standing armies, arbitrary laws that criminalize victim-less actions, etc.... all those things government was more than HAPPY to supply with very little prompting--despite all the caring and sincerity of millions of people... An aware perspective of history makes cynicism toward governance a fully rational and evidence-supported position. That's HARDLY a new idea, or one that hasn't had support from well-respected thinkers of the past.
