Yes the hcl should convert the alks. SWIM wants to try this but doesn't have any acetone at the moment. SWIM thinks it will be a tad more tricky than imagined. The resin is so tacky that acetone may not dissolve it, and the acetone would have to dissolve all the oil's as well.... If it can't do that (which SWIM imagines it can't) then you wont be able to get clean mesc.

Hmmmm, not clean mescaline per se, but mostly an even more concentrated form of the resin. One could also try using hot acetone to dissolve it all and then propably in the fridge it goes Pleased

This morning:
A length of cactus, somewhere between 12 and 15 inches, weighing ??? was cut up, de-skinned and de-spined, placed in the freezer for about 2 and a half hours.

After frozen, these pieces were placed in a pot with an equal volume of water and about a quarter cup of lime juice, as lemon isn't readily available. This was set to a low simmer. Occasionally, the mix has been mashed with a potato masher and stirred.

Not sure yet if I'll reduce to a tar/resin, or if I'll just reduce to a drinkable amount.

Also, I only added lime juice as I've heard many people mentioning lemon or lime juices... Does the acid help extract the mescaline further?

the acid makes mescaline citrate(citric acid) and it helps pull the mescaline citrate into the water
it's a sound

Excellent.

I just poured the liquid I have into a measuring cup: just over a cup and a third/about 11 ounces/330mL.

Tastes awful, but... Here goes.

alright so i simmered some cacti twice with juice of a lemon and a half, reduced and now have it in the oven evaporating.
now my question is has anyone else noticed a separation in their dish?
I've got a dark tan/light brown layer on top and a light tan/off white layer on the bottom.

Thanks

SWIMS last resin batch that is almost done evapping has a very strange whiteish layer on the top of the goo, anyone else had this? It looks like fat ontop of gravy, SWIM never came across this on previous batches.

House, have you seen this?

SWIM can only assume it is excess citric acid, he used a very large lemon that was super juicy. Either that or the HCL vapor from another extraction that is evapping in the same spot has reacted with the resin/goo

Really looking forward to giving this a go! Some cactus will be on its way shortly.

An interesting little side note regarding cactus potency...I think freakishly potent batches of cactus may well exist. I met and and talked to an interesting character from Oz at Boom festival in Portugal last summer who I'm still in touch with now. He claims to be the original inventor of changa, and he introduced me to it (was an amazing batch as well).

Well he also had on his person some very potent cactus that originated in Peru that he got off a shaman while there. I was unable to personally bioassay this batch due to lack of funds, and had to choose this or changa, and went with changa. He claimed that 5g of dried cactus flakes was a psychedelic dose, with 2g providing a nice buzz. But people remember that being plants, concentrations of alkaloids are subject to wide variation...just because Erowid's 'facts' don't comply with other people's observations, don't make those people wrong! He also claimed that the cactus was very old, and its activity was almost certainly due to alkaloids other than mescaline. I trust his observations, and he hasn't led me astray since then...I'll drop him a line and ask for more info, was a while ago now.

Actually though come to think of it, it might be more logical to assume that what was being offered (didn't get a good look a it, just a tiny taste) was a natural extract produced via a method like this one...

Sounds like you may have mashed up your cactus too much. CHUNKS!

Ahh yes he did! SWIM chopped very very thin slices this time and mashed them a couple of times during the cook. This batch is very different and the fatty solids are causing the resin to not solidify as it normally would... chunks are miuch better Pleased

Well couldn't you get more 'resin' out of any given cactus, depending on how you went about it? I mean to say, a proper resin tek could yield 30 caps, and a shoddy procedure could yield 60 caps with the same amount of alkaloids.

I got 20 grams of resin out of 60g's dried cactus. I was very pleased. especially as visual effects can be experienced with 5g's of this resin.

It's all about good cactus Smile

SWIM has had 20 grams from one batch and 40 grams from another, with the same wet weight of material used, its got nothing to do with 'how well' you brew.... So dont feel bad Mycokris.

The resin is not an exact science, there's a lot of prodding, drying, waiting and watching involved.... And then you never know if the caps will be strong or not. Unless you grow your own cacti and are familiar with its qualities, only then can you estimate the outcome.

SWIM is lucky to have a healthy garden and a good working knowledge of his plants potency
