Has anyone tried using acetone to pull from a basic MHRB solution? SWIM doesn't want to buy xylene as he has acetone easily available (and xylene stinks and is a lot more expensive), and would like to stick to OTC solvents as much as possible.

Thanks in advance

There is not much reason in using acetone to pull from a basic solution because acetone is for most of the times miscible with water. This means that no layers will separate. In reality acetone separates out of aqueous solution of high ionic strength however separation is never complete and therefore there is not much use; some water will always be present in the acetone fraction.

If no xylene is available, then why not use naphtha? It can be found in most of the countries where people use brushed and paints.

SWIM was hoping to avoid naptha as in England it is very expensive, and SWIM needs to do a relatively large ~800g extraction.

Furthermore, SWIM was hoping acetone would work as it lends itself well to FASA purification (by salting and then freebasing).

However it looks like SWIM'll have to fork out on coleman's fuel, since anything apart from naptha has shown poor results.

I would SERIOUSLY consider looking at using Limonene instead of Naphtha! It can be bought from a certain UK supplier for around the same price as Naphtha, and from what I gather is actually better at pulling DMT out of a basic solution. Check Jorkest's tek for a reliable STB method using d-limonene.

Plus, it actually smells nice!! Your flatmate/partner/friends/family will appreciate it Smile

Why not use naptha and freeze precip and then reuse the naptha again and again. You can buy ronsonol and Perma Fluid from quid shops. Then use D-limo to pull the rest of the alks.

Which UK supplier would that be? The D-Limonene tek does indeed look promising, however I've not had any luck looking on eBay and wasn't able to find a reliable source. Also looking at the tek, about 75ml per 80g of bark, since SWIM has to extract ~800g, around 750ml of D-Limonene might be required, which SWIM expects might be very costly. Furthermore, SWIM would require 11l of water, which is quite unwieldy compared to one of the simpler STB teks.

SWIM's also looking into various brands Panel Wipe as a naptha substitue. The problem with Bartoline and other substitutes wasn't that it didn't pull spice from the solution, but rather that due to its higher aromatic hydrocarbon content it actually dissolved freebase better thus making any freeze precipitation a lot less efficient, and at the same time didn't evaporate anywhere near as fast as naptha, thus making reducing solution volume for better freeze precipitation or even simple evaporation a problem.

By their nature panel wipes should evaporate very quickly, and without residue, however none of the brands on eBay have MSDS links or anything Sad SWIM might have to check out local paint shops or B&Q or something.
