i have picked up some 1271, it is a product that used to be 1268... i didnt check at the time of purchasing.. the ingredients are different-

the old faithful 1268 contained 100% naptha (same CAS number as a popular US brand) consisting of 10-30%N-hexane and <10%ethylbenzene

whereas the new 1271 (way older outdated UN code, New look bottle though)
contains 25% of: Iso-Heptane, N-Hexane, N-heptane, N-pentane
and a suspicious 2% of iso-pentane

so.. could these iso majoogelies be causing a problem? the 2% iso-pentane i dont like, it seems like something thats been put in there as a destabalising compound.

NOTE: i know nothing about solvents and have no chemistry knowledge (though pentane is lower grade and closer to petrol if im right?). im not getting anything from my pulls except some very negligible oils. it could be the bark, cause its kind of a 'test' extraction on a subspecies, but i dont like this UN code, what do you people think?

There is no such UN number as UN1271 so if they've labeled it as such then they've got it wrong!

UN1268 is a catch all UN number for Petroleum Products N.O.S. (not otherwise specified). This UN number would cover the mixture of alkanes you've got there. If you're just looking for a non polar solvent for extraction then that combination will work just fine. There's nothing particularly destabilising about isopentane except that it's got a very low boiling point so you're going to lose it from the solution as soon as it gets warm.

SAFETY: if you've got extremely flammable solvents like isopentane going into the air any flame, hot surface or sparking apparatus can cause it to ignite and flash back to the source!!!

my fears have legitimate foundations. the bottle is infact labled "UN No. 1271" and the msds i linked there explains what 1271 is (perhpas they went back to an older standard with less regulations, and then put something else in there which isnt listed)the supermarket chain in town has stopped selling 99% NaOH (now 55% drain cleaner only, and im not going to use that) i do infact think they have clamped down on solvents in australia, they have always been onto it. for example: you cannot get ethanol in australia which isnt denatured, and you cant get anhydrous acetone either. wether thats just slack industry practices or actual mandated boundaries towards use in chemistry... i dont know. if i can get my hands on some xylene, ill give that a go but until then im still suspicious

Their MSDS has a date of 1986 on it so they're about 30 years out of date! It has nothing to do with a current MSDS which has 16 sections and should now be compliant with the new GHS format (came into force 1 June 2015 for most countries). I should ask them for a current one if I were you - it should give you some more useful information.

There formerly was, back in 1986 it was used for "Petroleum ether" and thus is sort of correct. Not that anyone should care...

UN numbers are used for identification of goods in transport and can be substantially more vague than things like EINECS numbers or CAS numbers. Of course, if manufacturers are using information which is 20 years out of date, how do we even know if the stated chemical composition is correct?Confused

UN1268 is also for "Petroleum distillates N.O.S.", just for the record Smile, which amounts to the same thing. Isopentane boils at 27.8 to 28.2 °C so I'll happily reiterate the safety warning!

Your naphtha should be just fine for the usual purposes (although I prefer higher boiling stuff myself).

“There is a way of manipulating matter and energy so as to produce what modern scientists call 'a field of force'. The field acts on the observer and puts him in a privileged position vis-à-vis the universe. From this position he has access to the realities which are ordinarily hidden from us by time and space, matter and energy. This is what we call the Great Work."
