Today, August 6th, 2015, marks the 70th anniversary of one of the greatest man-made catastrophe's of all time-the detonation of a nuclear weapon against the city of Hiroshima. This tragedy demolished hundreds of thousands of innocent lives in the blink of an eye and ruined those of millions more in its aftermath. It was with the detonation of nuclear weapons over Hiroshima (august 6) and Nagasaki (august 9) that the second world war drew to a chilling close and the cold war began, thanks to such untimely and unjustifiable acts of nightmarish crimes against humanity. Today I think of what happened 70 long years ago and reflect upon such horrible acts our species is capable of committing against others and against its planet.

Threnody for the victims of Hiroshima is an excellent tribute to this grand fatality and i would advise everyone to experience it (preferably alone with a good sound system)-the music sends shivers down my spine and makes me think of that day when the bomb was dropped and humanity ensured the destruction of all life on Earth in the shape of a mushroom cloud.
'"ALAS,"said the mouse, "the world is growing smaller every day. At the
beginning it was so big that I was afraid, I kept running and running, and I was glad
when at last I saw walls far away to the right and left, but these long walls have
narrowed so quickly that I am in the last chamber already, and there in the corner
stands the trap that I must run into." "You only need to change your direction," said
the cat, and ate it up.' --Franz Kafka

Thank you for posting this.

I remember in high school we were shown a documentary about Hiroshima, and in it several surviving members of the crew of the Enola Gay (the plane that dropped the bomb) were interviewed. Specifically, I remember the comments of the man who actually "pressed the button", so to speak. He was asked if he had any reservations about doing it. He said no, that he was just following orders, and mentioned that he smoked a cigarette and took a nap immediately after they completed the mission--he hardly thought twice about it. I'll always remember seeing the footage of the survivors of the bombing describing their horrific experiences, and then the cut to this American man casually saying he would do it again without hesitation...

We should never forget this horrific act of violence and we should push each other to see it at face value for what it really was...and is, for that matter. People are still being affected by this...many people in the area suffer from radiation poisoning, babies are born with deformities and often die or live short, painful lives...truly one of the most atrocious chapters of human history.

Here's an excellent article that really emphasizes why it's so important that we make sure to never ever forget what happened on this day.

If you can just get your mind together, then come across to me. We'll hold hands and then we'll watch the sunrise from the bottom of the sea...
But first, are you experienced?

Here is the transcript from Emperor Hirohito's haunting surrender speech.

Quote:
TO OUR GOOD AND LOYAL SUBJECTS:

After pondering deeply the general trends of the world and the actual conditions obtaining in Our Empire today, We have decided to effect a settlement of the present situation by resorting to an extraordinary measure.

We have ordered Our Government to communicate to the Governments of the United States, Great Britain, China and the Soviet Union that Our Empire accepts the provisions of their Joint Declaration.

To strive for the common prosperity and happiness of all nations as well as the security and well-being of Our subjects is the solemn obligation which has been handed down by Our Imperial Ancestors and which lies close to Our heart.

Indeed, We declared war on America and Britain out of Our sincere desire to ensure Japan's self-preservation and the stabilization of East Asia, it being far from Our thought either to infringe upon the sovereignty of other nations or to embark upon territorial aggrandizement.

But now the war has lasted for nearly four years. Despite the best that has been done by everyone – the gallant fighting of the military and naval forces, the diligence and assiduity of Our servants of the State, and the devoted service of Our one hundred million people – the war situation has developed not necessarily to Japan's advantage, while the general trends of the world have all turned against her interest.

Moreover, the enemy has begun to employ a new and most cruel bomb, the power of which to do damage is, indeed, incalculable, taking the toll of many innocent lives. Should We continue to fight, not only would it result in an ultimate collapse and obliteration of the Japanese nation, but also it would lead to the total extinction of human civilization.

Such being the case, how are We to save the millions of Our subjects, or to atone Ourselves before the hallowed spirits of Our Imperial Ancestors? This is the reason why We have ordered the acceptance of the provisions of the Joint Declaration of the Powers.

We cannot but express the deepest sense of regret to Our Allied nations of East Asia, who have consistently cooperated with the Empire towards the emancipation of East Asia.

The thought of those officers and men as well as others who have fallen in the fields of battle, those who died at their posts of duty, or those who met with untimely death and all their bereaved families, pains Our heart night and day.

The welfare of the wounded and the war-sufferers, and of those who have lost their homes and livelihood, are the objects of Our profound solicitude.

The hardships and sufferings to which Our nation is to be subjected hereafter will be certainly great. We are keenly aware of the inmost feelings of all of you, Our subjects. However, it is according to the dictates of time and fate that We have resolved to pave the way for a grand peace for all the generations to come by enduring the unendurable and suffering what is unsufferable.

Having been able to safeguard and maintain the Kokutai, We are always with you, Our good and loyal subjects, relying upon your sincerity and integrity.

Beware most strictly of any outbursts of emotion which may engender needless complications, or any fraternal contention and strife which may create confusion, lead you astray and cause you to lose the confidence of the world.

Let the entire nation continue as one family from generation to generation, ever firm in its faith in the imperishability of its sacred land, and mindful of its heavy burden of responsibility, and of the long road before it.

Unite your total strength, to be devoted to construction for the future. Cultivate the ways of rectitude, foster nobility of spirit, and work with resolution – so that you may enhance the innate glory of the Imperial State and keep pace with the progress of the world.

Music is alive and in your soul. It can move you. It can carry you. It can make you cry! Make you laugh. Most importantly, it makes you feel! What is more important than that?

Being the son of a Korean war vet, i of course was not extant when the bombs were dropped. It's interesting to me, and to many other psychedelic observers, that the atom was split revealing it's destructive power at around the same time a force counter to the death energy of the atom bomb revealed itself to Dr. Hoffman, LSD, the life energy of which began destroying preconceptions through our society, laying the foundation for what we do here. Just as the road was opened to ultimate destruction, the obliteration of the human race Hirohito alluded to in his surrender speech, a path was also forged down another route, one that leads to life, and one which will hopefully win out as the forces that would wish to see the light extinguished on all human endeavor still exists although the cold war has ended.

On a personal politics post script, I've always been of the school, perhaps it's Amerikkkan dogmatic propaganda conditioning, but the numbers always made sense to me while the tragedy did not. The logistics of invading Japan after the defeat of Germany were severe, even with Russia's help, an invasion would have resulted in the protracted fighting of a war of attrition with the Empire. Even without the Reich support the Imperial forces of Japan and their fighting style would have been formidable in their homeland, just as they had been for four years in the Pacific. The fighting would have resulted in firebombing, land, air and sea battles that would have probably laid waste to more geography of the land of the rising sun, as well as ended the lives of many more Japanese, American, and Russian soldiers and civilians than three detonation of the two bombs.

By the way, most people don't know this, but Little Boy, even though physically smaller in dimension to Fat Man, was supposed to be just as, if not more destructive to Hiroshima, however, it was a 'dud' and the chain reaction did not competed even though it exploded. I think it was supposed to be several magnitudes l larger than it was. In fact, if i recall correctly, one of the reasons Nagasaki was destroyed was because the American forces worried that the psychological damage to the Japanese empire and its people wasn't severe enough to force surrender, as it probably wasn't, and they needed a little more convincing. I listened to an interview with ( damn forgot his name) but the Enola Gay bomber, he didn't speak so nonchalant as the above poster described, and lamented the loss of life, but rationalized the action much as I just did.

I don't support the use of terrifying weaponry, i don't support war, i don't even support violence. Not being alive then and only having access to our historical records, as confusing as they are, it seems to me the whole thing was somehow inevitable. The war was an excuse, on a cosmic level, to introduce this level of tech into the world. There is a reason these two things entered the world at there same time- the western psychedelic path and the western death path- Shiva/Shakti.

It is the world. It is the world we inherited. It is ours now.

The winner writes the history books.

Quote:
General Curtis LeMay, the tough cigar-smoking Army Air Force “hawk,” was also
dismayed. Shortly after the bombings he stated publicly: “The war would have been over
in two weeks. … The atomic bomb had nothing to do with the end of the war at all.”

Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet, went public
with this statement: “The Japanese had, in fact, already sued for peace. … The atomic
bomb played no decisive part, from a purely military standpoint, in the defeat of Japan.”

Also nuking civilians plays in the same league as gasing civilians. Just nuke the Fuji for a show of force and wait for an outcome, especially if you already have intercepts that the Japanese are ready to surrender.

All great points, i admit to not having done much independent research on the subject, you may just have inspired me to do so.

Please don't think i support the wholesale slaughter of human beings, or story the concept of war even.
