Or to say it with Monty Python: are there any women here?

I get the impression that almost everybody that I have been talking to here are guys. (Please correct me if I am wrong.) Assuming this is right: why are men so much more interested in exploring the inside of their heads than women are?

(I ask this as a part of my ongoing research on entheogens in spiritual practice. Replies can be quoted in my upcoming research paper. See entheogenstudy.org if you are interested in being more broadly interviewed about your entheogen practice.)

I have no idea what the percentages are on here, but in the real world this statement doesn't hold much water - the last big ceremony I went to was roughly 50/50, and a recent talk on entheogens I went to had a similar split, plenty of women present.

If there are indeed fewer women on the nexus maybe the question should be "why are men much more interested in arguing about things online?" Laughing

Or perhaps women are more prone to lurk? Or perhaps a lot of the people you assume to be guys, aren't? Not sure either way, but I don't think one's perception of a forum is necessarily always a good parallel for reality.

Not saying it'd be the same here as I've not seen any examples of it but on many online communities, as soon as someone mentions they're a women they receive different treatment which usually leads to them not enjoying their stay.

I'm sure there's a big mix of things going on.

Oh, they're here.

I'd wager that certain personality types are more prone to undergoing these experiences than others. It sounds obvious, but people of an introverted nature are the most likely to indulge. Gender is irrelevant Smile

I'm here! Very happy

Really though, I think The Hermit might be on to something about online versus real world percentage of females involved in entheogens. These boards do seem to be a boy's club for sure, but out at festivals, visionary art and psytrance shows the crowd usually seems pretty evenly split. It can't be said with certainty that the women at those venues are partaking, but really, who else goes to see Shpongle?

As for introversion versus extroversion in psychonauts, I'd wager quite a few extroverts are voyagers too. Most of the people I see at festivals are wild and flambouyant- definetly not wall-flower types. I have a feeling forums like these attract and retain more introverts though, since maybe we feel more comfortable and can more easily find like-minded folks in this type of setting.

Maybe some women are attracted to the creative and community aspects of the psychedelic scene, hence bypassing the virtual communities more often?

I have a suspicion that women prefer not to disclose their gender on their profiles, why this is I don't know, but it certainly creates the impression that these forums are more of a sausage fest than they actually are. In real life my experience has been that there are just as many female... y'know... those kinds of people at gatherings, raves, festivals etc. There's certainly no obvious discouragement of the nexus having more female members, but in the end I'm not sure it makes any difference. Some of my favorite nexians are 100% penis-free.

"There are no girls on the internet."

If you read the Erowid Trip reports, a sizable percentage of them are written by people who self-identify as female, so there are female psychonauts out there, I think it's more of an internet thing.

Also, in addition to females, are there any genderqueer folks (beside me, I mean?)

Blessings

Along these lines, someone else on here said they don't even assume the species of others on the Nexus. For all we know, there could be dogs, aliens, robots, etc. posting, although this is unlikely.

Here are some pertinent links where this exact same topic has been discussed before, even with some of the same posters as above!

https://www.dmt-nexus.me...aspx?g=posts&t=40825 - this one is really good as it has a poll where you can see the percentages of men vs. women on the Nexus, though it is 2 years old.

Yep

I don't know about anyone else, but I've always caught myself assuming that everyone on Internet forums and comment sections are guys, unless the poster blatantly states that they're female. I have no idea why.

One anthropological paper states that in Iquitos 70% are male. May find the article and post it. This may be due to the ritual and shaman thing that maybe men like more.

On the queer topic, I don't see much interest, but can't say for sure, I am estranged from my queer community for a long time...
