I met AMT for the first time a few days ago. I haven't had a DMT blastoff or ayahuasca breakthrough yet so I'm not that experienced with tryptamines (besides psilocybin which I find to be very different to the other tryptamines I've tried, well maybe a little like low dose aya), but AMT gave me a little glimpse. I vaped a bit, and took a bit orally, it came on very slowly then all of a sudden it hit me. It instantly reminded me of 5-MeO-DALT. Nothing like my sub breakthrough ayahuasca experiences, this was different, my mind was completely clear and calm and my emotions at ease, nothing like the hectic mental and emotional turbulence that psilocybin induces. This mental calmness made the experience pleasant and it was interesting because I could observe what I was seeing without being overwhelmed by emotions.
What I saw was utterly mind blowing. No auditory, tactile, mental, emotional distortions, just profound visual changes. Nothing was static anymore. I went to the toilet and the carpet was alive, it wasn't just breathing, it was bubbling. I've seen this waving and breathing phenomenon on psilocybin, but this was exponentially more intense, incomparable. Flat objects were now 3D and moving. I had an urge to sleep, so I lay down for a bit in the dark, then got back up and looked at my laptop and my God, there were beams of purple light coming out of it, it looked like some kind of interdimensional vortex. I had a great time observing the visual alterations, but there were still profound things happening under the surface. I was rapidly receiving new insights, but unlike with psilocybin, it didn't overwhelm me, I could actually understand a lot of it as I was receiving it. I also felt strong empathy and compassion for everyone and every thing.
The experience confirmed a theory I had been coming up with for a long time. I was on dexedrine for a few years and caused my dopamine system to become much less active (it'll take a while for this to return to normal). So when I do serotonergics, I don't have as much dopamine to balance out the serotonergic effects. This puts me in an interesting position to learn about the functions of these two neurotransmitters. With low dopamine, I get strong bodily discomfort. My mind is at peace but my body is not. I tested this theory by taking a small amount of amphetamine before while on a serotonergic psychedelic and I got almost instant relief. My body was no longer giving me discomfort. When I'm on a high dose of amphetamines, my body is so relaxed I could sit there for hours without moving a muscle, but my mind is not at peace, its never satisfied and easily falls into a mode of unconsciousness. Another effect of high serotonin/low dopamine activity is this sinking feeling, like I need to go to sleep but can't. Benzos don't relax the body in this situation, they can even make it worse, that further confirms that it is indeed dopamine deficiency that causes the physical discomfort.
The other day I had no speed but I had some codeine, opioids indirectly release dopamine and they are safe to use alongside these kinds of tryptamines. It worked, it eased the physical discomfort and sleepiness. It also reduced the intensity of the trip though. It calmed me down similar to how benzos do. It increased the euphoria and made things more interesting. Another function of dopamine is its heavily related to your ability to be interested in things. Speed makes everything more interesting, but this isn't necessarily a good thing because it can inspire one to spend time on pointless tasks. With dopamine deficiency, I feel restlessness, low energy and low interest in learning. It doesn't interfere with my ability to feel entertainment though. Sorry for derailing the thread into a discussion of pharmacology, I just thought I should share my discoveries because not many people are in the specific position I'm in that makes it possible to learn these things about some of the functions of dopamine and serotonin. You can read about them in scientific journals, but thats a different kind of info, they get that from animal studies which may not apply to humans. In my opinion, real knowledge on the non physical mechanisms of pharmacology comes from psychonauts, its about time the scientific community started endorsing us haha. I'll move this serotonin/dopamine discussion to another thread when I can post in the specialised forums.
