Hey everyone! So I've been a musician for like four years now, but It's only been in metal bands and I've kind of stepped away from that lifestyle. I've been thinking, "I mustve been making music for a reason, maybe I'll have some talent in my new favorite style." I want to start making sort of a psybient type style with a lot of tribal/primal influence. My questions are as follows..... What would you producers here recommend for programs and gear?? Money isn't too much of an issue and I can slowly get all the necessary things. Also, could you point me toward any good/okay tutorials on the net to help beginners of this sort of thing? Any help would be fantastic and I appreciate you sharing with me Also, show me some of your music!

10 years ago I went to school for this in Austin, TX.

At the time I was using a Mac with ProTools, and Reason by Propellerhead.

Unfortunately, I went a different direction with my life and have not kept up on the advancements.

I like your idea though, I'm looking for more music that was designed specifically for tripping.

Have you ever heard of the website Udemy.com? It's a place you can go to take an online course about damn near anything.

Hey glad to hear u decide to go with ur gut n start producing Basically the first thing is to chose a sequencer to learn, theres lots of great ones to chose from cubase, protools, logic, ableton…they all have different workflows but do mostly the same things. Personally im on cubase but its all preference depending on which feel u like the most n if ur mac or pc. Once u decide the sequencer then theres tutorials for them, utube, forums, manual…as far as gear all u really need today to make quality music/sound is a good computer, optional soundcard n midi keyboard, monitors for mixing, but first sequencer

Ableton's very easy to get into, it teaches you how to use it with interactive lessons and it's an all in the box solution where you don't really need much else.

I make psy/ambient stuff myself and I love it

Thank you guys, cosmic butterfly I was hoping you'd chime in, your music is wonderful I actually decided to go with ableton because I read so many good things about it. Can't wait to start putting some things together.

Ableton is a great program with lots of creative possibility. I use it
along with Digital Performer.

I suggest getting some music theory under your belt. The more you understand basic
music theory and song structure the better your stuff will be.

If indeed you're going with ableton live, that's definitely a sound choice.

It has a unique feature that allows you to build tracks without stopping any of your other elements.

You can grow the song as if it were a living thing!

I second the comment about music theory as well - but check this out:

Kind of a cubase/ableton hybrid that can run in linux and seems rather innovative. I'd gander myself but I'm committed to ableton now.

If you are on a Mac, Logic is worth considering for a sequencer - Apple owns it (I still have a copy somewhere of the last version Emagic developed for Windows before being bought out) and it is so well integrated with the OS. At $200 for the full-blown version, it has never been more affordable. But Ableton is a good choice too. For PC, the options are many. Check out Reaper as well for a very affordable and powerful piece of software. Many swear by it.
