I was thinking about this, and I could be completely wrong. Hopefully someone with more chemistry knowledge can jump in and share.

In cybs Max ion, would adding more salt towards the final pulls increase the potential amount of spice per pull?

My thinking stems from: each pull, we decrease the total concentration of spice in the bark solution - less removable dissolved solubles in the mixture. I'm wondering if by adding more salt, to increase the total concentration of solubles, would one have more efficient pulls towards the end?

My thoughts - as concentration of spice decreases, so does the potential per pull. If the solution stays super saturated, would there be more Efficient pulls?
Sometimes it's good for a change. Other times it isn't.

Interesting. I have no experience with this, but wouldn't it make sense that more of the 'spice' solution will stick to the salt resulting in more efficient pulls? The solubility may change, though.

It is hard to say without trying setting an experiment to find out. Generally however, with each pull you remove a fraction of the freebased spice (70% of it? 80% of it? - how much surely depends but it also doesn't matter much). The more you pull the more you'll yield but with diminished results with every pull...

If you think of adding more salt you may influence the amount of spice pulled per pull for the better (e.g instead of pulling 70% you could pull 90%), but it can swing either way for worse, i.e. more salt will deter good mixing of the solvent with the basic soup.

If you want to yield more just pull more or switch to a solvent other than naphtha, like xylene, limonene, DCM etc.

Thanks for the replies so far!

I don't use naptha, I use bestine, and love it!

I get pretty good yeilds. I recently have done the cybs tek and recieved close to 1.75% on 4 pulls... I'm happy, but i know there is more goodness in the solution. I only used about 40g of salt upon initial salting due to lack of supply.

I am curious more than anything. I have no complaints about a potential +1.75% - which I am certain I'll achieve by doing another two pulls.

200g MH root bark

First pull = 1000mg
second pull = 1000mg
third = 850mg
fourth = 600mg

3450mg so far out of 200g of bark.

I guess now would be a good time to test this experiment.... What do you guys think, add an additional 80g of salt and see what happens?

My mind was in a wandering place this morning and the logic was:

If a solution is super saturated with something, precipitants form. I.e. we can only dissolve so much salt in water before undissolved salt sits on the bottom. That is super saturated. If some of the dissolved salt were to be removed from solution, some of the undissolved salt would then dissolve. What I was hoping was that if the "spent" bark solution would be supersaturated with salt, would it aid in expelling the molecules that we want at a more efficient rate, closer to the end of the process.

I'm hoping that additional Ions in the solution "pushes" out the molecule that I am looking for.
Sometimes it's good for a change. Other times it isn't.

It's been done...adding more salt (after all your pulls)...to try and 're-invigorate' the spent mix to produce more molecule.

It works to a degree...a small degree. Only a small amount was retrieved.

As Infun says it can influence either way...the only real way to deplete the bark entirely is just to keep pulling until no more precips out...but experiment away if you like. (80g in 2litres of liquid sounds reasonable)

btw Super Saturation (via salt) is not a good idea (been there, done that, rejected it)

Thanks Cyb! I am using 2L of solution, so I believe I will add the additional amount(just for fun) and see what happens.

My last few pulls have been decreasing in 200-250mg increments. I would be curious to see how the next pull is effected by the additional salt. I'll stick to only adding 80g - I won't worry about super saturation.

Much appreciation!
