Hug46, I love "How TV Ruined Your Life"! It is one of many good british tv shows. I have lived all around the world and IMO TV in the UK takes the cake. Don't get me wrong, there is still a lot of cringe-worthy programs on British television... but there are some real gems out there.

Also, the BBC doesn't have any advertisements whatsoever. Winner in my book Pleased

I agree 100%. I have watched TV in other countries aswell. I am in France at the moment and i have to say, from what i have seen , that French TV sucks arse. I wonder if the more zealous anti-tv folk are not from the UK. I actually feel sorry for the folk that cannot differentiate between good and bad TV.

The bbc rocks and i think it has helped make the British one of the more open minded, culturally enriched and intelligent societies around. We are the arbiters of good taste. The Americans are quite good culturally but a lot of the time it"s down to the Brits to help point this out.

I have come to realize that TV and movies do a few things, some of these things include:

creating and enforcing stereotypes

this is very dangerous and harmful for all people, you diddnt know the world was a horrible horrible place until it was told to you by TV/movies. you diddnt know that nerds cant date beautiful girls until you saw it demonstrated on TV/movies. The real fact of the matter is that TV and movies paint every type of person in a false and demeaning way.(look how they paint hippies).

Everybody has a mate

notice in all TV and movies where there is a really strange guy, he always has a girl to fall in love with. What this does is tells us that in order to be validated , you must have approval from the opposite sex. if your doing something different, and you don't have a girl, you are worthless. this is an incredibly dangerous thing. it makes us depressed for being single.

you can write a book for each movies implying message, its filled to the rim with suggestions on how to feel and how to think, don't waste your time with this garbage , you don't need it.

cancel your cable or netflix account, sell your TV.

movies should be a rare treat.
It feels familiar , for good reason.

Great comments above!

Well, they call it 'programming' for various reasons. To 'tune' in to the reality of the set-channel you are viewing. You become separate from your feelings and perceptions. I think television is a distraction from doing or being what and who you are. It labels the mind with unnecessary phrases, events, commercials etc. This evokes a lot of dependence in people who are suffering from negative life-events. In other words, an escape to ward off the true-thinking mind and letting people who you've never even met before, show you what and how to think, feel, say and do. It is all subconscious, though.

This is why people call other people 'crazy' when they say that television is garbage, because the one who thinks about another as such was conditioned in the first place to express it, probably from T.V. It can become addictive, dependent, ego-centered and relying only on the status quo.

Throw Away Your Television.

Thumbs up

I guess you've never seen this......DMT mentioned on a cartoon on network tv..........pretty much cancels out all the bad said about tv here in two minutes. There are no absolutes.
Fear, belief, love phenomena that determined the course of our lives. These forces begin long before we are born and continue after we perish. We cross and recross our old paths like figure skaters; our lives are not our own. From womb to tomb, we are bound to others. Past and present. And by each crime and every kindness, we birth our future.

Following this line of reasoning, will eliminating all potentially addictive things from our lives solve the problem or is there something to be said of moderation, self-discipline, and willpower?

It's curious to see many people here missing the point:

Quote:
In regards to TV, you don't have to over-indulge. It's possible to let yourself become temporarily attached to it, to "get into it" for a little while and have some fun without becoming a TV junkie. Practicing moderation is, IMO, one of the keys to enjoying life without over-doing it. Life is full of potentially addictive sensory experiences, but if you hide from them, you throw away not only opportunities for new experiences, you throw away opportunities to exercise willpower. It's about balance. Yin and Yang.

Relating meth to television is idiotic. I'm not calling you idiotic, but the comparison; I'm hoping you are just trying to be cute with this ridiculous analogy, as you can't possibly be childish enough to believe this.

Ok, how many more posts now till this threads degenerates to a fight? I bet five or six. I'll pull my popcorn back and enjoy some of this impending drama...or maybe not.

People, please exercise some manners; pitubo and 112233 in particular, dial down the language and use proper discourse. Your latest posts contained some quite flammable material.

Apologies for fanning the flames.

I just felt the argument to be nonsensical, as I thought it can be used to rationalize any destructive behaviour. The use of "meth" as an illustrative example was maybe a bit too much of a hyperbole and needlessly hurt other peoples feelings. I did not mean to equate meth and TV, if anyone thought I did and felt insulted, I apologize.
