I agree with you though, a scale definitely needs to be used next time. I wasn't aware that DMT crystals behaved like that. So it's entirely possible that the amount of DMT actually in the pipe was minuscule? Even though it looked "the same as last time?"
It might not be a bad idea to get a refrigerator/freezer thermometer from your local grocery/department/hardware store to ensure that your freezer is at least -15 to -20 F. I would be shocked if they cost more than $5 USD. It also wouldn't hurt to try freeze-precipitating for ~48 hours or so. I always freeze-precip for at least 48 hours, though I am not certain that it makes any difference at such a low temperature.
It is absolutely possible that the amount of DMT in the pipe was very little, even though it looked the same as last time. I remember one specific time that I finished a small-ish batch and I could hardly fit 1g in a 2 dram vial. But there have been other times that I could fit >3g of a different batch in the exact same vial. Think of it like snow flakes. Sometimes snow comes down in huge, fluffy flakes that aren't very dense. Other times it falls in densely concentrated little beads. The factors that determine the density of snowflakes may be different than those that determine the density of DMT crystals, but the similarity is in the fact that one substance can exist in a wide range of different densities.
