Hi guys,
For those who don`t know, the Oculus Rift is a fully immersive 3d head-tracking and display headset. Think of the matrix, the camera moves exactly where you look, with the next to no lag, and the 3d is the best I have ever seen (once tweaked).
I got my dev kit 2 days ago, and am blown away, and will only improve with trying various setups and games.
This is a game changer, has anyone else tried a rift yet?
I am someone who has been VERY dubious of 3d technology, and think that movie/cinema 3d is purely a gimmick, and a bad one at that.
This is highly immersive, and there are some very cool application demo's I have tried thus far.

Rollercoaster: You can physically feel a sensation of falling when dropping in the coaster, amazing.

Half Life 2: Wow, the integration is fantastic! being chased is very scary as you feel right there. Looking up at giant legged robot and the building expanses and moving boxes right in-front of your face is one hell of an experience.

4D Cinema Theatre: Very cool, create a server and watch a movie with a friend.
This is very early beta, but watching a movie in a cinema experience with a friend is very exciting to me.

I suggest everyone (not only gamers) to be very excited for the next few years of VR.
There are some issues at present, text is very difficult to read at times, and the headset can be a bit uncomfortable. but with tweaking, it has improved, and will only continue to improve with further testing.

Has anyone else used one yet?

Good quality Syrian rue (Peganum harmala) for an incredible price!

Interesting. Looks promising. Have not played around with VR for many years now. I'm not much into gaming either. The virtual sharing a movie experience sounds interesting though. Can you have multiple people all watching and interacting at the same time? I've always wanted to recreate the experience of swimming with wild dolphins in my own home though. Perhaps this would be a good starting platform.

Please post more as this product and its software develops. Thanks.
Let us declare nature to be legitimate. All plants should be declared legal, and all animals for that matter. The notion of illegal plants and animals is obnoxious and ridiculous.

All my posts are hypothetical and for educational/entertainment purposes, and are not an endorsement of said activities. SWIM (a fictional character based on other people) either obtained a license for said activity, did said activity where it is legal to do so, or as in most cases the activity is completely fictional.

I've been following the whole VR thing since before Lawnmower Man. I remember Jaron Lanier waxing philosophical about all of its promise and limitations, along with a crude estimate of how much processing power/speed we'd need for true seamless realtime VR, juxtapozed against a graph of Moore's Law, which more or less correctly predicts the doubling every 18 months of processing speed.

Anyway, we are there. Our machines are now fast enough and clever enough to meet the demands of VR, and with enough commercial pressure the gear will slim down pretty fast. Are you aware that the Rift was funded by Kickstarter? Pretty much a garage operation with a vision.

Incidentally, so far VR has been used primarily in doing team-oriented high tech design work, such as automotive design. Gaming is an inevitable use, but visualization in general can be facilitated beautifully in a VR realm. Imagine doing 3D modeling in a VR sculpt studio, for example...

Moore's law has stopped, only core count can increase, which only helps in parallel processing, and there are plenty of situations where that is not possible, or very difficult.
Architectural applications are great, taking a tour of your house plan in full 3d would be very enticing.
3D modelling would be great with a Rift + Razer Hydra in clay modelling software like Cinema 4D, but I believe the text issue would be a BIG problem for that application at present.

I was just looking on their website. It really does look amazing.
I would love to get a flying around game with this Big grin

Wow, great! I've read a book once as a kid that started the story with a brutal first person shooter game played with a virtual reality helm just like this. Only the richest kid in the class had one and he got owned royally by some kid that beats everyone in this game.

My vision of the future is a virtual reality lens. Just plain graphics covering the entire light entrance of the iris. If you can get a high enough resolution it will work smoothly. Connect everyone with this lense to the world wide web. Add in some technology miracle to control movements with thoughts alone and the whole population will find themselves immersed in hyperspace within no time. Pleased

For now, we'll just have to settle for DMT Laughing

I posted on this a while back, about a game for the
Oculus Rift that is supposed to feel like a Psychedelic experience.
Actually inspired by an LSD experience the designer had
At Burning man.

My partner Def wants a Dev kit. Been talking about it a lot.
Knowing him, we will have one soon. He's a big gamer.

who's minding the store?- Ram Dass
Mz.Gypzy is a fictional character. I have a very active imagination. I like to make things up, to entertain myself and others on the internet. I do not use, or condone the use of illegal substances. Everything I write here on the Nexus is for pure entrainment purposes only.
