It seems like a pretty big stretch to think talking about what toothpaste you use qualifies as "passing medical advice"

It's not stretching it at all, especially if someone has sensitive issues when it comes to dental hygiene and believes that he'd be better off with a home-made toothpaste than his dentist's recommendations.

Well this thread isn't about people asking for personal help with dental issues that would normally require a dentist but could possibly be addressed via home-made toothpaste...its simply a tek to make your own toothpaste. To think that is out of bounds is utterly ridiculous to me...I don't see people suggesting to anyone with real dental issues that they simply need home-made toothpaste and not a dentist

Advice regarding (potentially) poor disease-prevention measures, such as dental hygiene in this case, is in par with bad medical advice.

Well I guess I should add that I am not a dentist, I am merely a person who enjoys making their own things whether thats Tea, Tables, Toothpaste or W/e. Homemade is cheaper and if done right usually better. If anyone here is really concerned about your teeth and are happy with the way they are, just keep to your regular regimen and don't worry about this. However I know a lot of people that barely brush their teeth once a week and things like this actually encourage them to practice healthier hygiene routines.

On a funny side note, how many people clicked this thinking it was some kind of tek to extract spice with toothpaste? hahaha.

Yo Jellyfox.......

Just to clarify a point. If all you are doing is buying a jar of coconut oil, and using it as toothpaste, that doesn't qualify as "making toothpaste"!

But, thanks for the tip.............may have to "make" some as well!
I am certifiably insane, as such all posts written by me should be regarded as utter nonsense or attempts to get attention by using totally fictitious verbiage...........

The above refers to the fictitious 'I'

I think if someone affirms that this alternative toothpaste is better than traditional one with only subjective experience as a proof, this can be dangerous because someone may decide to give up on the standard option and might end up having health issues due to some tip in the nexus.

That being said, if this is just offered as a not-mutually-exclusive option and with a 'do as your own risk' kind of disclaimer, I dont see a problem.

Personally Ive been experimenting with different natural toothpastes, commercially available ones or made by people I know, and its a lot of hit-and-miss at least as far as how clean my teeth feels afterwards. Id like to experiment with some home made recipes, and coconut oil plus other essential oils sound like a good start, though not sure if its enough. What is it about the standard toothpastes that supposedly are good for the teeth? Is it the fluoride? Is it the base? Or some kind of surfactant in the recipe ? Or what? Lets research more, ask dentists, etc.

As for sodium bicarbonate ruinning teeth enammel, I guess we should try to look at scientific publications see if theres any experiment done with that.. Im sure it relates to amounts/dosage of course, considering the commercial toothpaste also often contain some.

Another interesting thing we could research is the teeth health in different native populations, see if there is anywhere where people have good teeth and use some natural alternative.

I am not a dentist. However, i am a beekeeper!

Something ive been doing recently is scraping the fresh gooey propolis from the hives, along with a bit of beeswax, making a chewing gum of sorts.
I then ball the wax around the propolis with about 1:4 propolis:wax ratio. I then chew like hell, making sure to expose as much of my teeth to it as possible! Its a little odd at first, because the propolis sticks to the indents in your teeth (which is kinda the point!). Eventually, with enough chewing little pieces of the gum break of and one can swallow it easily.

However, in the future i would like to put a layer of pollen saturated honey between the propolis and wax.

A beehive is the most sterile place in nature, mostly thanks to the propolis.

Weston Price's work was based on that, and it was all about diet. Indigenous peoples had pretty much perfect jaws and teeth..and when those same peoples got onto western diets based on grains and refined sugars etc all that changed. He did extensive work spanning a number of years with peoples on traditional non "commerce" diets all over the world. Many of the people he studied with perfect teeth and jaw structures probly never brushed their teeth ever.

I was looking at a med site on an unrelated topic and found this study on humans/fluoride randomly

Exposure to high fluoride concentrations in drinking water is associated with decreased birth rates.

I forget the content in most toothpaste. Does anyone have figures on that? I remember it being quite high, but not any specifics
