possibly could end

basically time succumbing to entropy acts as a 'cosmological constant' of kinds, and time being variable throws a wrench into the red shift theory.

This is basically the essence of the Abrahamic cosmological narrative (e.g Quran 55:27).

Personally I understand entropy as the passage of time. Then we can define a "rate of change" of time, by taking the ratio of information created:existing information per second. Each instance of time contains (Sum_t[I_0,I_t-1] + I_t ) bits of information where I = total information, t = time. Summing to infinity you can imagine what happens, I don't know but my monkey mind has a vague idea. Either way, the higher we take N, the closer N/Sum_i[0,N_i - 1] becomes to some number, whether that is infinity or the Golden Ratio (1.618...).

Perhaps when it reaches such a point that would be the end, this would be quite elegant to say the least. To understand this rate of change, we would have to look at the horizon of the universe and find a function that describes its rate of increase of surface area with each instance of time. This is actually why I place a lot of faith in string theory, entropic gravity and their merging via the holographic theory of the universe. String theory is a language, in that language we can speak the words of entropic gravity, and make the statement with strings, that the universe is a hologram unto itself with a precise amount of information encoded onto a precise surface area of the horizon.

Then we contemplate the observation that intelligence increases with time. This also means energy efficiency and consequently information efficiency must increase with time. How I make sense of this theory is that in that snapshot at the endpoint of the universe, there exists the condition for some kind of perfect flow within just that manifold there.

In that flow, there is no further need for "time" because the Platonic Forms (i.e. Akashic records) are fully materialised, then all that remains is an exploration of that form; indeed this entity would be beyond form altogether, containing all forms and data structures within.

Then how I make sense of this present existence is that it is a search for a path of least resistance, which we observe in the study of flow & systems: all systems abide by the same principle which causes flow to be maximised in some way through them, this is known as the Constructal Theory. We see that nerves, trees, rivers, galactic filaments, they all share the same dendritic structure because this is what maximises information flow between nodes in a network and intrinsically minimises the rate of increase of entropy itself as a function of 'time', which is nothing but entropy in the first place!

TL;DR: Tao

Accelerating expansion and change of signature
Marc Mars, José M. M. Senovilla, Raül Vera
4 pages. To appear in the proceedings of the Spanish Relativity Meeting ERE'07
(Submitted on 10 Dec 2007)

"We show that some types of sudden singularities admit a natural explanation in terms of regular changes of signature on brane-worlds in AdS5. The present accelerated expansion of the Universe and its possible ending at a sudden singularity may therefore simply be an indication that our braneworld is about to change its Lorentzian signature to an Euclidean one, while remaining fully regular. An explicit example of this behaviour satisfying the weak and strong energy conditions is presented."

Here is the article mentioned in NewSci referenced in the O.P. (to be published in Physical Review D)

Is the accelerated expansion evidence of a forthcoming change of signature on the brane?
Marc Mars, José M. M. Senovilla, Raül Vera
5 pages, 1 figure. To be published in PRD
(Submitted on 3 Oct 2007, last revised 29 Nov 2007)

"We show that regular changes of signature on brane-worlds in AdS bulks may account for some types of the recently fashionable sudden singularities. Therefore, the possibility that the Universe seems to approach a future sudden singularity at an accelerated rate of expansion might simply be an indication that our braneworld is about to change from Lorentzian to Euclidean signature. Both the brane and the bulk remain fully regular everywhere. We present a model in which the weak and strong energy conditions hold on the brane, in contrast with the standard cosmologies leading to the analogous kinematical behaviour (that is, with a diverging Hubble factor)."

What I understand is they're saying at the end of time, the universe will change from the appearance of a curved space (Lorentzian manifold) to a flat space (Euclidean manifold).

Interestingly I have read a book where the author derived the same notion via pure geometric intuition, the book is "Everything Forever: Learning to See Timelessness". Amazing read - you do not need to understand words like "AdS" or "brane-worlds" to read it, it's all geometry and plain intuition and analysis of simple observations.
