We are in the process of extracting LSA from HBWR. I've never done it before, so I thought I would get some feedback to make sure all is well.
So far, we've done four washes with naphtha so far. We did our last one late last night and left it to evaporate overnight. The ground up seeds seem to be completely dry to the touch and not oily or anything like that, but it still smells like naphtha. We were sure to use a brand that had no additives and did an evap test to make sure it evaporates cleanly and it did. The smell doesn't seem to be dwindling much anymore.
I've never really used naphtha before so I'm not familiar with what's normal and what's not. Should the seeds not smell like naphtha at all, or is it normal for it to leave a kind of lingering smell?
EDIT: Also, since I can't seem to get rid of that slight lingering naphtha smell, has anyone ever tried evaporating most of the naphtha out of the seed powder and then putting it in alcohol and just taking the top layer off after you're done? Being that alcohol is polar and naphtha is non-polar, and that the density of naphtha is less than that of alcohol, the tiny amount of remaining naphtha should float to the top of the alcohol and separate like oil on water. Just curious if anybody has tried that. I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Whether you think you can or cannot, you are right.
