This is amazing. An 80 year old man has created his own mini eco-system in a bottle. The bottle was planted 53 years ago and in that time has been watered only once, being sealed now for 40 years. Because it is sealed, the water cycle is self sufficient. Photosynthesis is of course possible being a glass bottle. This also creates oxygen, allowing precipitation. When leaves drop off they rot, allowing the creation of carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and storing nutrients. A fascinating project. yea saw this in the chat the other day. Mind blowing! i didn't know it was possible We should put thousands of these babies in geosynchronous orbit and have them ready to reseed the earth shall we completely mess things up ^_^

It seems to be a single Tradescantia. I'm guessing that in years to come; if the plant continues to survive, that the substrate will eventually take over the bottle. You will then be left with some fantastic compost/substrate material to re-use elsewhere.
