This is amazing. An 80 year old man has created his own mini eco-system in a bottle. The bottle was planted 53 years ago and in that time has been watered only once, being sealed now for 40 years.

Because it is sealed, the water cycle is self sufficient. Photosynthesis is of course possible being a glass bottle. This also creates oxygen, allowing precipitation. When leaves drop off they rot, allowing the creation of carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and storing nutrients. A fascinating project.

Wow I wonder if a genetics test would reveal any mutations...

Was it a single plant?
If it was more than one, then I wonder if the evolution produced a more resistant species?

The article said the original use for the 10 gallon carboy was sulphuric acid...

The 1960's must have been a cool time Cool Big grin

It seems to be a single Tradescantia. I'm guessing that in years to come; if the plant continues to survive, that the substrate will eventually take over the bottle. You will then be left with some fantastic compost/substrate material to re-use elsewhere.
