Yes, it is quite interesting. Especially People who have what is called chromesthesia, which is when one sees color in response to sound. There was a study done with people who have absolute pitch, or the ability to identify and replicate any music note only from hearing it. In this study these people saw colors that corresponded to specific notes which allowed them to reproduce the note. This field is so intriguing, I love the study of the brain http://pom.sagepub.com/content/15/2/198 We have chosen this life for a reason, and it is our purpose to understand why.
When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced; live your life so that when you pass, the world cries and you rejoice.
Only those who are willing to go too far can possibly find out how far one can go.

Dreamer042 This is incredibly fascinating, a few years back while tripping on acid I experienced the sensation of being able to taste colours for the first time truly a mind blowing expereince. Much Peace and Understanding

I find synesthesia very interesting. I've only encountered a couple of synesthates in my life-time and they are a very rare and special group of people!
Personally I have a cross between mathematics and 'touch', specifically in my hands. This appears to be permanent. Doesn't mean I'm a savant or genius by any means, but solving problems often requires a lot of finger manipulation or drawing in the air with my hands. When explaining things to people(helping students in class as an aid) I often have to remember that they cannot see/feel what I do with my hands so it's hard to translate. During tests I have to try and not look too crazy while flipping equations and performing operations by flicks of the wrist and finger manipulations, hehehe. Or by using hand manipulations I am able to hold objects that don't actually exist such as cylinders, cubes, molecules, etc.
Apparently, the areas in the brain between mathematical thinking and touch are very close. Some people are incredibly gifted in that they can expand these operations into touch and do immense calculations far faster then a person can type them into a calculator. I'm not that lucky but I still count my blessings.
I have occasionally had mathematical operations take on color. For example when doing a U substitution(basic integral calculus) if I used dg and g(because it felt right) instead of du and u I noticed it became "red".
Never-the-less the phenomenon is cool and I really like learning more about it. Thanks for making this thread I'll be sure to read the article soon.

im gonna read this later. i love a lot of ramachandrans stuff, and synesthesia is fascinating does anyone experience it in dreams much? i've had it in dreams almost nightly the past year or two but its very hard to describe
<Ringworm>hehehe, it's all fun and games till someone loses an "I"

Consciousness itself has no illusive biological sensory interface.
Those are something we picked up along the prism.
Since our circuitry does not project, but instead act as a drip line, synesthesia is an inevitable result of letting go of the boundaries that cookie-cut divide our simulation.
The paths redirect in correlation to the flow of currents. Etch reality with the light of focus.
The ripples of awareness reach as far and wide as you can resonate.

Experienced this once. A metallic purple sheen like color tasted not unlike lemons... As limited as it was, I'm grateful to have experienced it. blooooooOOOOOooP fzzzzzzhm KAPOW! This is shit-brained, this kind of thinking. Grow a plant or something and meditate on that

http://www.ted.com/talks...ent_ways_of_knowing.htmlTED talk from this guy Daniel Tammet, who has an unusual form of autism where he is very communicative.. he has a very pronounced and specific type of synesthesia where he literally sees numbers as colors, shapes, etc. He recited pi to some 20,000 digits by not remembering numbers, he just 'saw' the parade of shapes and colors and translated them accurately. Cool talk about perception and different ways of thinking. Glad you reminded me to look this up, I want to read his books. “What goes on inside is just too fast and huge and all interconnected for words to do more than barely sketch the outlines of at most one tiny little part of it at any given instant.” - David Foster Wallace

Synesthesia is one of my favorite sensory effects from psychedelics. LSD in particular induces it in me to a spectacular degree. While on one hand it’s something that I can see living with happily on a regular basis, I feel that it would become ordinary then. The cool thing about being able to experience it through ingesting substances is that it keeps that novelty. “Was I a criminal? No. I was a good member of society. Only my society and the one making the laws are different.” - Owsley Stanley

Quote:The physical world is vibration, quanta, but vibrations of what? To the eye, form and color; to the ear, sound; to the nose, scent; to the fingers, touch. But these are all different languages for the same thing, different qualities of sensitivity, different dimensions of consciousness. The question, "Of what are they differing forms?" seems to have no meaning. What is light to the eye is sound to the ear. I have the image of the senses being terms, forms, or dimensions not of one thing common to all, but of each other, locked in a circle of mutuality. Closely examined, shape becomes color, which becomes vibration, which becomes sound, which becomes smell, which becomes taste, and then touch, and then again shape. (One can see, for example, that the shape of a leaf is its color. There is no outline around the leaf; the outline is the limit where one colored surface becomes another.) I see all these sensory dimensions as a round dance, gesticulations of one pattern being transformed into gesticulations of another. And these gesticulations are flowing through a space that has still other dimensions, which I want to describe as tones of emotional color, of light or sound being joyous or fearful, gold elated or lead depressed. These, too, form a circle of reciprocity, a round spectrum so polarized that we can only describe each in terms of the others. Sometimes the image of the physical world is not so much a dance of gestures as a woven texture. Light, sound, touch, taste, and smell become a continuous warp, with the feeling that the whole dimension of sensation is a single continuum or field. Crossing the warp is a woof representing the dimension of meaning—moral and aesthetic values, personal or individual uniqueness, logical significance, and expressive form—and the two dimensions interpenetrate so as to make distinguishable shapes seem like ripples in the water of sensation. The warp and the woof stream together, for the weaving is neither flat nor static but a many-directioned cross-flow of impulses filling the whole volume of space. I feel that the world is on something in somewhat the same way that a color photograph is on a film, underlying and connecting the patches of color, though the film here is a dense rain of energy. I see that what it is on is my brain—"that enchanted loom," as Sherrington called it. Brain and world, warp of sense and woof of meaning, seem to interpenetrate inseparably. They hold their boundaries or limits in common in such a way as to define one another and to be impossible without each other. --Alan Watts This is from Joyous Cosmology, thought it was relevant. Great read, recommend it for anyone interested. "Consciousness grows in spirals." --George L. Jackson If you can just get your mind together, then come across to me. We'll hold hands and then we'll watch the sunrise from the bottom of the sea... But first, are you experienced?

Synesthesia can now be synthesized via sensory augmentations. Telepathy is an electrical rat. Bump posts like techno. What we knew all along described in the echo of a reflection blue shifting. Got my X-ray vision mod, son, and I can taste the way they move.
Peter tuned into the gigahertz. He began to see not only the conversation itself in fluid motion, but those who were speaking, and their immediate locations, at the same time.
