an essay i wrote a couple years ago... it's ran in a couple of hole-in-the-wall lit zines, & i like it... i thought a few here especially might appreciate the sentiments, so i offer it for your entertainment & consideration...

Quote:

FUCK THANKSGIVING

ok, so not really... but i got your attention, didn't i...

you can cheat on your wife... you can cheat the irs... with modern witchcraft and alchemy you can even cheat death for a while... but time?.. that which cannot be controlled cannot be cheated... or so you think...

clocks... calenders... two words, one concept... divide my time up and control it for me... tools of the man to enforce conformity... fuck that... my time is fluid... yours should be too...

wouldn't it be strange if some cat walked up to you in a bar and said "happy seven-thirty in the evening"?.. but we let the same thing happen with the calender... "oh, it's the last thursday in november, i should feel exceptionally happy and thankful today"...

FUCK THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

be happy and thankful everyday... celebrate every day as if it were a holiday... when the powers that be set aside special days for happiness, it implies that unhappiness and misery are the norm... that is what they want... predictability and complacency are the tools they use to herd us like cattle... refuse to accept that... do not let them put constraints on your time or your joy... have a great meal everyday... get together with as many of your loved ones as you can muster at least three times a week... fucking live a little...

at the very least, set your own standards for holidays... alternating tuesdays after the full moon are fun... so are thursdays when the wind is blowing in a southeasterly direction... so is any day when someone you love smiles...

after all, if we are not here to have a good time, why fucking bother...

Thanksgiving is mostly set up to prime people for the Black Friday shopping orgy.

But what the hell, we just had a great meal, vegetarian but otherwise traditional. We take the thing at face value: try to be grateful. Toast each other, toast our kid, our legion of cats. Don't take any of it for granted. Life is a miracle.

But yeah, I agree: every day should be like that. Without the food coma.

Be thankful and grateful everyday, share everyday. The fact we have to delegate an ironic holiday a year to do so is rather sad. Thanks giving is about being thankful to have a vast swath of uncivilized OCCUPIED pristie land to waste and spoil. A place with so much potential. And do away with the natives at the same time.

"let those who have talked to the elves, find each other and band together" -TMK

In a society in which nearly everybody is dominated by somebody else's mind or by a disembodied mind, it becomes increasingly difficult to learn the truth about the activities of governments and corporations, about the quality or value of products, or about the health of one's own place and economy.
In such a society, also, our private economies will depend less upon the private ownership of real, usable property, and more upon property that is institutional and abstract, beyond individual control, such as money, insurance policies, certificates of deposit, stocks, etc. And as our private economies become more abstract, the mutual, free helps and pleasures of family and community life will be supplanted by a kind of displaced citizenship and by commerce with impersonal and self-interested suppliers...
The great enemy of freedom is the alignment of political power with wealth. This alignment destroys the commonwealth - that is, the natural wealth of localities and the local economies of household, neighborhood, and community - and so destroys democracy, of which the commonwealth is the foundation and practical means.โ€ - Wendell Berry
