hello nexus,

I have asthma and therefore I sometimes have to use salbutamol (brand names Ventolin albuterol). Now i´m planning for my first Pharma experience with harmalas extracted from rue and some pure freebase spice.
So I started reading everything about drug interactions with harmalas and found that its advised not to take harmalas and salbutamol together.
see https://www.dmt-nexus.me...aspx?g=posts&t=37251
What the information does not tell you is, what the interactions might be and how long upfront and after the use of harmalas you should not use salbutamol.

Anny information and-or experiences regarding the use of harmalas and salbutamol (ventolin albuterol) would be greatly appreciated.

also are there nexians with asthma that use some kind of medicine that does not interact with harmalas.

thanks.

Salbutamol taken via an inhaler results, depending on inhaler technique, in 10-20% of the dose reaching the lungs;the rest stays in the oral cavity or spacer device, if used.

The plasma half life is 2-7 hours with the majority being metabolised in the liver; from 77-97% of the dose is recovered from the urine by 48 hours post-ingestion with 40-60% of this being the hepatically derived metabolite and the rest, free salbutamol.A tiny amount is excreted in the faeces.

The risk of MAOI with salbutamol is not regarded as an absolute contraindication but theres a real risk of significant tachycardia.Salbutamol also pushes potassium into cells making the plasma potassium low; this can predispose one to cardiac arrythmias when coupled with the effect of MAOI on the other (endogeneous) adrenoreceptor agonists.
I am paranoid of my brain. It thinks all the time, even when I'm asleep. My thoughts assail me. Murderous lechers they are. Thought is the assassin of thought. Like a man stabbing himself with one hand while the other hand tries to stop the blade. Like an explosion that destroys the detonator. I am paranoid of my brain. It makes me unsettled and ill at ease. Makes me chase my tail, freezes my eyes and shuts me down. Watches me. Eats my head. It destroys me.

I am asthmatic too, or was, and used Ventolin, now I have Xopenex instead (levabuterol), but it's the same family. I am not dependent on any of my asthma meds anymore, but keep an inhaler around for special circumstances.

So I heard you say that you 'sometimes' need to use your inhaler, maybe not twice a day like they are often prescribed- so based on the info corpus c gave about half life and such, which is really helpful info, you might be able to deduce that if you have not used your inhaler 48 hrs before an MAOI, then you might not have a strong reaction.

But that is only how I would use the info, for me. You'll figure out what is right for you. I can only use a half dose under normal circumstances as the racing heartbeat and such knock me right down, so I'll keep those specs in mind if I have the opportunity to drink harmalas.

As for other asthma medications, Advair was extremely effective for me, getting me out of a chronic respiratory problem. it has a steroid and salmeterol, and according to a secondary website may be a problem with MAOIs- Advair's site doesn't get that specific unless you download the prescribing and dosing info.

When I went off of Advair because of the steroid component, I used Cromolyn sodium as an inhaled solution for inflammation and bronchospasm. It's great, but strong for me, another half dose deal, and whether it reacts with MAOIs, I don't know.

I also used to use Singulair- of course, not a rescue inhaler, but was all part of healing my lungs up. Again, have to just keep checking stuff online to see if there is a problem, and then find info like corpus has so you know how long the stuff is in your system.

Fortunately, I don't need to use any of these anymore. My lungs are much happier now- less exposure to allergens, inhaled and ingested seems to have done the trick.

Drugs, sometimes you can't live without them, and sometimes you just don't want to!
I hope you find the solution that works for you.

he,

Thanks for the clarifying answers. Thumbs up
Basically I think that if don't use Ventolin for a day or two I can use harmalas maybe take some potassium supplements just to be sure. Also I use the lightest version of 200 micrograms, so from that I get at most 40 micrograms of witch only 5 micrograms will be in my system after 21 hours after two days its almost nothing.

So basically outside the hay-fever season I'll be fine.

Also I contacted the local Santo Daime (ayahuasca church) (since I want to try this also in a more communal way) and asked them the same question. There answer was that, as far as you don't use it on the same day that they never encountered any problems. They also told me to contact my doctor witch I will do next week or so.

o and julz,
Its great to her your of your meds I'm not there jet but I'm working towards that. Also I'll take some notes from your story for when I'm visiting my doctor.

One more question, does this contraindication also apply when harmalas are taken sublingually ? say 30 miligrams?

thanks allot

I hope that you can successfully get away from the meds too. Limiting my exposure to allergens- horse farm, hay, etc. and dietary allergens, made all the difference. I am planning to move to a different place where I have no allergy, hay fever, asthma symptoms at all.

It has really made a difference to me, not just in $$. It gives a whole new meaning to freedom.

Hope you have a really good, safe experience!

Dear Nexians,

Made a doctors appointment with a lung doctor and asked him about the possible risks of taking harmala's and salbutamol. At first he didn't know the substance so i explained that it was a short acting MAOI specifically for MAO A type.
The doctor replied that when using inhalation salbutamol the salbuthamol only binds to the receptors in the lung and almost nothing of the substance gets to the blood. So thereby the chance of a contraindication was very small. Also he mentioned that allot of people take Moclobemide and salbutamol at the same time without any problems.

Next to the doctor I asked 2 independent pharmacist, and both replied that it would be now problem.

So to conclude I'm a bit confused about all of this. Especially because the very informative post of corpus callosum seems to tell something very different.

In the end I'm thinking of trying a Small sub-lingual dose and measure my blood pressure and hart rate, and than in several sessions work my way up to a full oral dose.

As mentioned in my post earlier, use of salbutamol and MAOIs together is not a contra-indication.Salbutamol inhalers cause tachycardia in some users and concurrent MAOIs can exacerbate this.

Next time you visit the lung doctor, do ask him/her what the mechanism of this tachycardia is. Smile

dear nexians,
Just to be sure the information in this thread is not misinterpreted, here a safety warning.

Please remember that the advise I got from my doctor was for me only. My doctor knows my complete health situation.
Before you decide to mix medications with MAOI please consult your doctor first.

safe travels...
