So...discovery of the century? Or has someone at CERN put the wrong plug into the wrong socket again?

CERN celebrates as Higgs signal reaches significance

They are breaking out the champagne -- guess we'll have to see...

Quote:
UPDATE: CERN has indicated it will extend this year's LHC run by several months in order to get enough data to know more things about the newly discovered boson. This is the last chance they'll get before the extended shutdown for upgrades, and they probably have some sense of what it will take to push key measurements into statistical significance now.

It seems this is real (twice, Atlas and CMS!).

btw, about the "wrong plug". The scientists at CERN never stated that they found particles faster than light. They stated that they found something odd and wanted external input to help them deal with it, and if possible even point out what wend wrong/right.

Unfortunately the media ran away with it and changed a lot on the way before presenting their 'facts' to the public. And we all know how the media reports the 'facts' on entheogens so don't think they will be different on this one.

Kind regards,

The Traveler

These are great news.

But after some years the changes would have been big any way.

LHC would have made a big effect or change in our future whether the God Particle existed or not.

So how can this be used to improve the battery in my phone? Not much else I need right now.

We don't know yet. Just as they did not know back when electricity was discovered that more as one hundred years later, a bunch of people could communicate on something called the internet about entheogens because of that discovery. Pleased

Happy Higgs Boson day everyone! Cool

This is an incredible discovery. One of the fundamental elements of our understanding the workings of the universe has nearly been confirmed, leading to more accurate and solid predictions and experiments in the future.

Here's a video explaining the Higgs Mechanism and the particle in layman terms:

..well said Traveler..
i don't think we should 'write-off' their anomaly, or tachyons yet..

It'd be nice if they can figure out what gives matter mass.. and then create a technology to remove mass from matter.. and then.. hello nearby star system, or has it already been done?

..i liked this explanation from the article A1pha linked:
Quote:

The Higgs is just the quantum of a field, analogous to the photon's role in electromagnetism. The field itself imparts mass by virtue of a "nonzero vacuum expectation." In the most distant corner of the Universe, far from any sources, the potential with respect to the Higgs field is still greater than 0. Therefore, any particle that feels the Higgs field always carries potential energy because of it, the same way charged particles would always be at a nonzero voltage if electromagnetism had a nonzero ground state. This potential energy acts like mass, E/c^2=m.

i cant watch the youtube videos, maybe somebody could explain what the higgs boson is ( a little closer to laymans terms than the above please lol). From what i understood just reading around on the internet, it is a force much like gravity that governs what mass matter will have right? so in other words the force that creates physical reality? or am i way off?

The Higgs Boson is a little quanta, a little lump of energy, coming from the hypothesized Higgs Field that permeates all of space. This field gives the property we call mass to elementary particles as they move through it. There is a sort of friction between the field and the moving particles, and this resistance the object meets is essentially its mass (where mass, simply put, is the resistance a given object, or particle, offers to acceleration). So the Higgs Field explains how particles obtain their mass, and where it comes from.

If you have any more questions, I will try to answer them Smile

PS; of course the above is very simplified, and isn't really a great substitute for the more comprehensive "understanding" one gets through the real mathematics and physics.

^understood citta, thanks for that explanation. so what are the implications of this? doesnt this point to something very significant? When i first heard that they were trying to find this i thought it would be huge worldwide news all over the place when they did, ive barely heard anything about it.
