If you just want to get straight to how I messed up and fixed it, skip to the last two paragraphs. Well, not sure how much anyone will care about this, but when I first made a machine I was unsure if it was really as easy to use as everyone seemed to suggest. I read about how easy it was to get 50mg doses in one inhalation with a GVG + Torch and I wasn't very successful making my own that I was starting to doubt.
My first machine was the traditional 50mg liquor bottle with a hole in the base and pre-torched/cleaned steel/copper wool in the neck. I had a good 30mg dose (very white product and carefully weighed) and I found that at first I could barely get anything out of it at all. I felt more like I was suffocating than anything. I ended up taking a number of hits, on three different occasions across 25-30 minutes. I felt what seemed to be the subjective effects described by others but not very intensely.
I assumed I was just bad at inhaling and holding DMT at first, and decided to make a larger machine to hold a large hit that I could prepare myself for. I ended up using a 375ml wine bottle with the same basic design. It worked a little better and at some point I had what I would say was a pretty intense but pleasant trip. The next few experiments were with that larger machine when I realized there was a lot of crystallization trapped on the inside, and even still on the wool. Without even trying to scrape the crystalization I was able to get significantly more vapor after a little while and that lasted a number of hits (including scraping the crystals onto the wool) before I noticed the DMT was probably about out.
At some point during taking the wool out and putting it back in I looked at the picture of a machine online and noticed that the wool was significantly less packed together. I think I was reading about the use of a copper screen in a gvg or something at the time and how it suggested to pack it tightly so no DMT gets through, but I realize now the machine instructions said it's natural for DMT powder to fall through so load it over a surface you can recover it from. This is when I tried breaking up the copper wool and making a looser, smaller plug. I scraped up some of the last of my extractions (which I'm also still working on) and it worked better than ever, even without that much material to work with.
This is when I made a serious mistake. I realized that I was wasting DMT crystallizing on the large bottle, and that the smaller bottle with a smaller plug would conduct heat better and have a much smaller surface area for crystals to attach to. I applied the same principle of just pushing in enough to get a plug without trying to compact it. I had just finished an evap of some yellow spice and was very foolishly too impatient to try out my new device that I didn't measure it. I am not sure how much spice I loaded, but I'll say it was probably too much. I underestimated how effective this newly modified tiny machine would be. I was just using a standard bic lighter and only got in one lungful. This was the first time I was unable to put my machine back on the floor before I was overwhelmed by subjective effects. When I finally made it back to reality, it was just laying there next to me on my bed. Anyway, if anyone's having a problem with their machine, I just leave a little bit of space between the rim of the bottle and the wool plug (so that when dmt might melt towards the bottom the vapor doesn't as easily go straight out the bottom) and I start with empty lungs, machine perpendicular to the ground and parallel to the lighter, with a few seconds of very slow inhalation. That's to warm the wool initially, and after that it's less important how you hold it since you require a lot less heat to keep the wool warm and vape the DMT, if any, depending on how much you have and how hard you inhale. But for me, I increased the flow of my breath after the first few seconds and then maybe half-speed. Never felt it get hot (although what you inhale can get too hot if you breathe in hard for a bit and have the flame very close to the plug) and never felt uncomfortable at all holding in the vapor. Oh, here's a picture of the machine I based my plug size on..
