I'm am just curious, how different is Ayahuasca from smoking DMT? And should it be treated differently due to how long the trips last?

very different.

Ayahuasca is the vine, and it contains no DMT at all. The DMT is found in the admixture plants and they are added to potentiate the visions of the vine. The harmala alkaloids found in the ayahuasca vine are what make "ayahuasca" ayahuasca.

Smoking DMT pales in comparison to ayahuasca IMO. Ayahuasca is deeper and more meaningful and more healing. It can grab ahold of you if you take enough admixture though and not let go for some time, where as smoking the DMT just lasts a few minutes.

DMT is amazing no matter how you take it..but personally I think ayahuasca is a superior experience in a number of ways.

Okay so the harmala alkaloids are what makes you trip on ayahuasca (I'm still a noob with this stuff)? And also you get a break through experience but it just takes a longer amount of time to break through due to the length of the trip?

The harmala alkaloids are beta carbolines and share a similar structure with iboga alkaloids..they are visionary medicines all by themselves. The DMT admixture plants are added just to increase the effects of the harmalas. Yes you can break through with ayahuasca, and when that happens it is on a level that smoked DMT does not really prepare you for..with ayahuasca the way it is brewed in the jungle with alot of vine by the time you get to a breakthrough level there are going to be full on real(as far as you will be concerned) spirits flying around or walking though the room talking to you and other things you can not imagine..
