Since my big 1gallon glass jar cracked i had to quickly move my extraction to a plastic jug.

I´m in the middle of doing a few heptane pulls and will after that start with my xylene pulls.

Now i wonder if xylene will destroy the jug? since the xylene i bought was in a metal can.

the jug says PE-HD

if it's PE-HD (little symbol with the 2 in the middle) than it will be fine

You can find some useful info with the keywords "hdpe chemical compatibility (or resistance) chart" or something similar in google, its a good idea that you're being cautious and questioning it Smile

Results seem a bit varied as for HDPE and Xylene/aromatics, they range from "not recommended" to "good/fair". I think with some time it could dissolve HDPE, maybe even quick use may dissolve small amounts. Definitely dont use heat. Personally I would avoid it in general, not only because of plastic itself but also the plasticizers that may be present.

I dont think you will die if you use it quickly and use from that batch once or twice but I wouldnt risk my health to be consuming (and in clean-conscience giving it away to others) something that I know could have plastic/plasticizer traces and toxic to my body.

I have some 1liter bootles that u use for a second step extraction, i will probably just use them instead, will take a bit longer but worth it in the end.

I feel nasty for using xylene anyway, will get me some limone very soon.

Don't do this! Xylene eats away at the plastic over the course of a month, i had it sitting it outside in winter and it was fine but as soon as the sun hit it it deformed it, almost had highly basic goop everywhere.

I wouldn't take chances with the aromatic solvents. Once you see what they instantly do to non hdpe plastic, you probably won't want to risk using xylene on any plastic.

i used my 1l glass bottles so no worries Smile

Just dried out my last plate with changa.

2x re-x and 3times remelted with acetone probably got every trace of xylene out.
