that looks vaguely like viewing slug/snail damage through out of focus binoculars.

Snails don't like to crawl over copper, btw. I bought some copper tape at the garden store, put a ring of it around 2x 5gal buckets, put a board across the buckets, then place any snail bate plants on the board. This gives the slimey buggers no path from the ground to those tender young succulents.
