I was extracting mescaline with xylene, then acid water, then I basified water (testing if this could precipitate), didnt happen, so I evaporated the water (with FreeBase Mesc) and at the end (no more water) I kept heating (by mistake) and when I saw the Mesc was like a light blue doing bubles (because the heat above)...

Anyone (If understood my xperience) could say What kind of reaction was It? Because I have seen brown or orange mescaline after this proces but never blue.

Maybe some condensation reaction?
I can remember organic chem, when i had to made aspirine and some polymer forms as 2nd product in some stage, and It was like a gum as "my" product.
Also I remember when I had to made some colorant . I learned that resonating molecules, specially when nitrogen forms some double bonds like imines or azides (I dont remember well), and Mescaline has this aromatic ring, MeO- groups and -NH2 ...

Also Im interested in if I could use It safely or if anyone can tell me How to turn back the reaction.

I will attach some pics later because Im waiting for the dried final product (and maybe this will solve the problem).

Never mind...

I read somewhere that the HCl from hardware store, which is yellow, its before it has some Fe ions and other metals...
then, as I added NaOH to it i think It formed some complex or just FeO2 (Its blue I read...)
... But a mistery until I could buy some lab and learn inorganic chem xD...

Damn, there's no way it is just mescaline, it has to be some weird impurity from your chems, as you suppose. Please dont ingest that!

Cant you get pure chems? What about looking at the msds of your products before using?

If you cant find the right information or cant get pure products, maybe change them, for example doing acetate extraction and not hcl, etc...

Good luck and tell us if you find the culprit and if you find a solution

Complete guess here , but you didnt use any copper utensils did you?

It looks like copper. The blue solution could be Cu2+, the solid blueish crystals could be Cu(OH)2 that precipitated when reacted with NaOH. And the brownish solid on the back looks like some oxide. In any case, I would discard everything and try to get purer reagents/cleaner tools.

I finally dried the "mesc". You saw that a lot of the blue liquid left the mesc....
the picture shows you the final dried product. Its still light blue...

Why dont use this? Is copper or iron complex or oxides poisonous?

oh so did you use copper? Ah , i cant tell if its poisonous or not man . I was just guessing at a cause , cant tell u any further than that . But if i were to throw in another guess id say smoking copper and its related compounds may be undesirable . . .

Why not perform a mini extraction on it? If you consider it a "lost cause" then there is nothing to loose, try seeing if the blue would carry over in a non polar solvent followed by salting.

Also it would be nice if you could mention/check the chemicals used in the proccess..What brands where they? Do you have access/can you locate their MSDS? I would suggest revisiting the extraction procedure you used to see at which point the contamination was introduced/formed.

Oh and by the way, before doing all that and arriving to a clean product, please do not consume it. You do not know if its indeed a copper compound. Copper itself can be toxic, wikipedia more or less will answer your questions about its toxicity.

If this contamination does in fact come from the reagents, I think that a greater problem is the possibility that other contaminants are present and that they are not so obviously seen as the blue copper ions.

I dont use other reactants, is just the muriatic acid from the hardware store. This product is yellow, and It shouldnt be. So I checked it using google and I founded that this muriatic acid contains some metals (I read mainly Fe, i dont know about Cu).

I think at the moment of basify acid water (with this muriatic acid) I formed some Metaln(OH)n complex or MetalOxide, which I just saw it when few water remaining (as you see in the pic above), thats because there is a few and this precipitates as the solvent was missing.

I think im gonna extract again but using white vinegar this time, or just use a little to see what happen...

(sorry my english :S, Iwas hurry)

definitely dont use 'just a little' of the same. It will just diminish the amount of crap but it will still be there. I strongly suggest to change your products, and yes white vinegar sounds perfect Pleased

good luck

At last I think I solved it...
While doing another xtraction I saw that the tap of the botle I used to shake the juice with the solvant, which have a blue plastic on the inner side (see the tap of some coke botle), the plastic was afected by the xylene (I read sometime this is a litle corrosive for plastics). I think these is the contamination, I compared the colors and they are just the same blue. In the picture you can see it consentrated, but in the paste I can see perfect the same color.
So well, Im not using that... I redisolved it with xylene but it was like sand or something and did not disolved... so I can think the plastic merged with the mesc... And Im not using it anyway xD Sad

thanks everyone for helping me Wink

please dont use normal plastic next time, thats the first thing you should check (which materials are compatible). Be glad the plastic was blue, if it was transparent maybe you wouldnt have noticed and would have eaten some plastic...

Better luck next time
