GENEVA โ€” Scientists at the CERN research Center say their "Big Bang" project is going beyond all expectations and the first proof of the existence of dimensions beyond the known four could emerge next year.

In surveys of results of nearly eight months of experiments in their Large Hadron Collider, they also say they may be able to determine by the end of 2011 whether the mystery Higgs particle, or boson, exists.

Guido Tonelli, spokesman for one of the CERN specialist teams monitoring operations in the vast, subterranean collider, said probing for extra dimensions โ€” besides length, breadth, height and time โ€” would become easier as the energy of the proton collisions in it is increased in 2011.

Other CERN physicists say the success so far of the world's largest scientific project suggests that some great enigmas of the universe they have in their sights could be resolved at least partly much sooner than they thought.

Awesome news. Thanks for posting. I want to go to CERN. I want to see those detectors they fascinate me.

So exciting.

I was just watching the episode of Cosmos with Carl Sagan last night where he was discussing other dimensions.

Thank you for posting this!

Can you visit it as a "tourist"? I'd love to go, the pictures of the Atlas detector are incredible.
Oh great - the world has just been replaced by elf machinery.

Sorry to be negative, but it doesn't sound like anything but an excuse to write a news story, which I know we all really REALLY hate around here. Proof could emerge???? Next year you say? So there's hope some proof might show up later? OK. I was really excited when the collider turned on. There was talk of time travel and a whole bunch of wild stuff..... none of it happened.

^^It takes several years of extremely precise experiments and then analysis, and then interpretation of said analysis. Remember CERN is heading into new territory...it isn't good enough just getting results and that's it, go home, mission over. One then needs to interpret what these results actually mean, and put them into context of the bigger universal picture. It was always going to take a while, and they knew this long before they ever turned it on. It's not the case of pressing a big red 'ON' button on the Hadron collider and then figuring out all the secrets of the universe in half a day's work...it requires years of careful and precise analysis by many of our best particle physicists from all over the world. I say good luck and god speed to them. And I mean that 'time travel' stuff always sounded fruity to me as well, never believed a word of it.

To me it doesn't matter if they find extra dimensions or not. I am just happy for the researchers and for science in general when they set up such a huge experiment and get better results then they planned. Extra dimensions is a bonus but not the only thing going on there.

I think as tourist they don't take you into certain sections. Probably need University tour or special access to get into the insides.

The collider hasn't even been turned on for 9 months yet... patience is a virtue Pleased

It's also possible that the scientists know more that any of us could imagine...

Quote:
These collisions have been creating millions of simulations of the Big Bang which 13.7 billion years ago brought into existence the primordial universe from which stars, planets and life on earth โ€” and perhaps elsewhere โ€” eventually emerged.

wow, millions? that's ALOT of data.
Quote:
These experiments have shown the power of the link-up of 140 computing centers around the world known as the grid which processes the vast amounts of information that ion collisions produce.

yep, definitely alot of data

or..
Quote:
On Dec. 6, the collider will be shut down...
...It will start up again in February, then run at full blast, with protons, until the end of the year

so, they got til dec 6th to produce millions more simulations with ions and then they start up with PROTONS in feb

I think it's possible we'll be seeing results sooner than imagined. just my opinion

I LOVE IT!! The part where they talked about colliding lead ions! Temps 1 million times hotter than the heart of the sun!! Why hasn't there been an anime centered around a CERN experiment yet? It writes itsself.
"Then he looked right through me
With somniferous almond eyes
Don't even know what that means
Must remember to write it down,
This is so real
Like the time Dave floated away
See my heart is pounding
'Cause this **** never happens to me!"

Quite exciting news indeed!
Do not listen to anything, "Steely" says. He is a made up character that his owner likes to role play with. His owner is very delusional and everything he says is completely untrue and ridiculous.
