I figured some one here would be interested

While I was in Nimbin recently at the 2008 Mardi Grass, I had the opportunity to sit and blow a joint with Ed Rosenthal. We got to talking about Terpenes, with particular regard to a chapter in Ed's latest Book, "The Big Book of Buds Vol. 3", called 'The Secret Chemistry of Cannabis Odors and Highs'.
The discussion led to a Terpene known as Myrcene, which is the most prevalent Terpene found in most varieties of Cannabis, but not found in hemp. It is also present in high amounts in mangos, hops, lemon grass, West Indian bay tree, verbena and the plant from which it derives it's name Mercia.
Myrcene appears in small amounts in the essential oils of many other plants.
It's odor is described as clove-like, earthy, green-vegetative, citrus, fruity with tropical mango and minty nuances.
Without going into too much detail from the book, Ed explained that the presence of Myrcene was an important factor in the quality and enjoyment of the high from smoking certain Cannabis strains, particularly those strains that came from tropical climates...namely Sativas.
Ed went on to tell me that it was possible to enhance the quality of the high from a low potency bud, through the addition of Myrcene. He went on to say that this could in fact be tested and verified. And this is how he told me to do it.
Say I had a nicely grown bud that was lacking in the 'Zing' department when smoked. If I was to eat a Mango one hour before smoking the bud, Ed said the addition of Myrcene to my body from the mango, would have a profound impact on the quality of the high, and I would notice the 'Zing' that was missing, had I just smoked the bud without having eaten the mango.

Yes folks, you heard it here. You can improve the quality of the high from a bud you smoke, if you eat a fresh mango ONE HOUR before smoking!

Yep... that is true.

You can also eat the mango after smoking, say, an hour in, to "repotentiate" the herb you already smoked I believe. There was a brief discussion on the effect of mangos/terpenes on cannabis use over in this thread a while back. It starts at post #16.

Hmm, this is really interesting! Perhaps adding some lemon grass or hops to a joint may work good. Or what about spraying low to medium quality bud with some essential oil from hops? Myrcene is, by the way, one of the unwanted sedatives in elemi oil.

Like they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure. Myrcene on its own is sort of stoning, and one reason why people often say that nutmeg oil is a little stoning.

While myrcene brings the elemi drip down a notch, causing a withdrawn sleepy effect, it has a very different action on cannabis, improving the high. You can remove it using the Triple E tech, and instead of discarding it, save it for when you smoke cannabis. It will do wonders for the high.

Myrcene is not all bad, it just doesn’t mix well with elemicin. In fact, myrcene is a pretty safe compound in terms of toxicity. While you wouldn’t want it in your elemi oil, you do want it in your cannabis.

Myrcene is normally the most prevalent essential oil in cannabis. But too much causes a headache. I think most people have experienced poor quality pot that’s too high in myrcene and have gotten a headache from it. At the right mix, its great for cannabis.

I tried this one today. Not a "WOW" effect. Could have been placebo.
I was stoned as usual, nothing special.

Ahh, effects depend on the myrcene content of the mango

Smokin Moose wrote:
I think the best thing is that Mangos and Juniper berries can allow us to make better use of poorer quality pot, and that is basic economics.
If you ever see Kensington Pride (or Bowen Mango as I call them) or Honey Gold mangos on the shelf, grab them as most Aussie mango strains are quite high in Myrcene whereas a lot of Mexican mango strains are less % of Myrcene.

I guess this is why i never liked so called 'citral' cannabis: too much myrcene.

SWIM has never heard of "citral cannabis" but citral and myrcene are distinct compounds

I stumbled on this article when looking for info on fruits high in Myrcene. I think it is important to note that Myrcene does have quite profound efects on the body, other than enhancing the quality of the high from Cannabis. This study also relates to Limonene and Citral, two terpenes also present in various cannabis strains.

Central effects of citral, myrcene and limonene, constituents of essential oil chemotypes from (Mill.) N.E. Brown
Phytomedicine, Volume 9, Issue 8, Pages 709-714

Abstract
Summary

Citral, myrcene and limonene
(100 and 200 mg/kg body wt., i.p.), constituents of essential oils from Lippia alba chemotypes, decreased not only the number of crossings but also numbers for rearing and grooming, as measured by the open-field test in mice. Although muscle relaxation detected by the rota rod test was seen only at the highest doses of citral (200 mg/kg body wt.) and myrcene (100 and 200 mg/kg body wt.), this effect was observed even at the lowest dose of limonene (50 mg/kg body wt.). Also, citral and myrcene (100 and 200 mg/kg body wt.) increased barbiturate sleeping time as compared to control. Limonene was also effective at the highest dose, and although citral did not increase the onset of sleep, it increased the duration of sleep, which is indicative of a potentiation of sleeping time. Citral (100 and 200 mg/kg body wt.) increased 2.3 and 3.5 times, respectively, the barbiturate sleeping time in mice. Similar effects were observed for myrcene and limonene at the highest dose (200 mg/kg body wt.) which increased the sleeping time around 2.6 times. In the elevated-plus maze, no effect was detected with citral up to 25 mg/kg body wt., while at a high dose it decreased by 46% the number of entries in the open arms. Asmaller but significant effect was detected with limonene (5 mg/kg body wt.). While myrcene (10 mg/kg body wt.) decreased only by 22% the number of entries in the open arms, this parameter was decreased by 48% at the highest dose. Our study showed that citral, limonene and myrcene presented sedative as well as motor relaxant effects. Although only at the highest dose, they also produced a potentiation of the pentobarbital-induced sleeping time in mice, which was more intense in the presence of citral. In addition, neither of them showed an anxiolytic effect, but rather a slight anxiogenic type of effect at the higher doses.

Note: Lippia alba is a common garden herb from the Verbenaceae family.

So, it seems that in Myrcene, Limonene, and Citral, found in Cannabis, may also assist is sleep and muscle relaxation. I would be keen to hear from those who have tried the mango, to see if they also noticed enhanced sedative and muscle relaxant effects after smoking cannabis, apart from the better quality high.
