I've read a fair bit about folk putting some lime or similar base compound in with the original mix when preparing substrate in order to prevent growth of contaminants later on in the grow.

Would it have the same effect if when dunking the cakes before fruiting and between flushes, you add some lime to the water? It seems to me that it should work, though I haven't read about anyone doing it.

seems feasible

peroxide in the dunking water is also somewhat helpful

Yeah I've been on a little search for peroxide but have had no luck.

If you're rolling your cakes in perlite or another cake cover (i don't know much about this, i'm not a big fan of cakes) it may be more beneficial to mix a little bit of lime with the cover as opposed to, or in addition to adding it to your dunking water. Peroxide is awesome and is relatively harmless to the myc, in some screwy set ups, I've used it to beat back cobweb mold multiple times and still yielded quite nicely Smile .

EDIT:

Fractal Rider, you should use 3% hydrogen peroxide, it's standard in the US. If you've got a cobweb mold situation, just spray it undiluted on the mold, let it foam up, and then rinse it off with water. If you're using it as a preventative in your dunking water or misting/humidifier water, 10% peroxide (of 3% concentration)/90% water is a good ratio, or at least I find it to be effective.

Personally, I do not think the pf tek is better for starters...This is not based on anything other than the fact that I never used it and, as we all do, began as a "starter" Very happy

I've heard some bad things about pf tek, but a lot of good things. There's a guy over on shroomery who posts threads, ironically titled "pf tek sucks", where he does some pretty awesome stuff with the pf tek as far as colonization and yields. The pf tek is supposed to be a fairly simple methodology for growing relatively small quantities of mushrooms. Since my first grow I have used Wild Bird Seed teks and crumbled and cased. I was interested in casing from day 1, so never really explored pf's tek...

I had contams in my first two grows, but that was because I was overly concerned with contamination and did some stupid stuff as a result. Starting with my third grow I made a glovebox and used it. I have had zero contam issues since then and I dont even use it for casing.

If you are familiar with/have been researching the pf tek, I would say by all means, go ahead and use it. If, however, you have interest in other teks, pursue that interest. As with all experiments/projects if you put in the proper time researching and carrying it out, you will be surprised by what you can accomplish. Mushrooms are surprisingly easy to grow and are so much fun to be a part of. As soon as I saw my first pinset I began experimenting with various fruiting setups, cuz why not? My advice would be to pick a tek that you understand most clearly and appears tp work for your particular situation and grow requirements/restrictions. Beyond that, choose what you like...

swim just pours 3% straight into a large bowl of water for the dunking. it mainly beats down cobweb mold, but also mugs bacteria. psilocybe mycelia has peroxidase enzymes which break down peroxide. some microbial contaminants don't
