SWIM has been researching chloroform for use as a non-polar solvent. It can be easily made by reacting Acetone with Sodium Hypochlorate (bleach). The only problem is that Chloroform degrades into the poisonous gas Phosgene and must be stabilized with Methanol or Ethanol to prevent this.
SWIM is wondering how much methanol would need to be added to the Chloroform to prevent it from breaking down. Hopefully somebody around here could help.

According to an MSDS up to 1% ethanol is used to stabilise the chloroform.

Also storing your chloroform in brown glass bottles stops the production of Phosgene.

You can use methanol or ethanol to stabalize chloroform. Keep it out of the heat and the light.

If SWIM used methanol to stabilize the chloroform would the methanol in the chloroform pull DMT-salts. Would this render the chloroform useless for defatting?
