I dont think so. Supposedly DPT was synthesized in 1950, and tested on dogs by chemist Merrill Speeter in 1954. Shulgin was born in 1925, most likely it was someone else.

I'm not sure . I couldn't find a lot on it either . Is not an overly complicated molecule , it could have been synthesis as early as the 30s or 40s especially during wartime experimentation . But I really don't have knowledge on it .

..clouds..was it in Italy by Vitali & Mossini in 1959?..i don't have the paper [ Vitali T. & Mossim, F. (1959). Preparation of some N-substituted tryptamines. Boll. sci. Fac. chim. Ind. Bologna ], but it is referred to along with DPT in this very interesting chemistry paper on tryptamine derivatives from the UK military in 1964 which i have attached for members..

This has sent me on a binge of reading errowid DPT reports. Oh boy, do people love to make the same mistakes over and over. "I eyeballed the stuff", "I am an experienced psuychonaut so I was sure I can handle anything", etc etc, full of people snorting then calling ambulance.

Then I jumped over to 5meo reports and damn, people are VERY misinformed on "do"s and "don't"s, dosage, blasting off alone with it. One "recent" report is from guy who thought he got N'N and vaped 50mg of 5meo...
Though every "bad" trip seem to have instilled deep respect in all participants Smile))

nen888,

Stephen Szara in his paper "DMT (N,N-DIMETHYLTRYPTAMINE) AND HOMOLOGUES: CLINICAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS" wrote this:

"Speeter and Anthony (1954) reported that N,N-dipropyltryptamine (DPT), another tryptamine derivative, produced observable effects in dogs."

nen88,

I spent a whole day searching for this. Half of the sources say 1950 and the other half say the 1950's. It was defintely before 1954, since Merrill Speeter could have easily synthesized it, he was a very skilled chemist.

I also believe it could have been synthesized around 1930's as DMT was, but who knows.

The mystery remains.

..it's good you sparked the search for the unknown, clouds, and i admit i just jumped to what was at hand...i noticed there is a Speeter 1955 chemical abstracts paper i can't presently access that may have clues..

Speeter, M. E. (1955). U.S.P. 2,708,197, ChemicalAbstracts, 1956, 5035.
..it seems it's the patent for the synthesis of tryptamines and production of a range of various novel tryptamines, which i haven't had time to look at in detail... https://patents.google.com/patent/US2870162A/en
(apologies time in my writing only allows me a quick stab at this issue...the theory on military wartime invention is a good one..i also would have imagined Manske coming up with it..hope you find the answer clouds!)

DPT has always been charged negatively for me (and by that, I mean, it lends itself towards a dread similar to a salvia divinorum overdose.) Having worked through various dosages and ROAs, I'd decided it might be the most unsettling tryptamine I've worked with. YMMV.

Update:

Seems like Merrill Speeter could very well have been the first or (one of the firsts to synthesize it)

-> Wikipedia says that DPT was firstly reported in 1973.

but the first report is from this paper:

Speeter, M. E., & Anthony, W. C. (1954). THE ACTION OF OXALYL CHLORIDE ON INDOLES: A NEW APPROACH TO TRYPTAMINES. Journal of the American Chemical Society, 76(23), 6208–6210. doi:10.1021/ja01652a113

if you read the second page (or page 6209) you can find the following text:

Footnote No. 5:

"Studies by Dr. Nolen Connor of our Laboratories indicate the hydroxyl group is not essential for activity on the central nervous system as 3-(2-dimethylaminoethyl) indole has grossly the same action in the dog as bufotenine. In contrast, 3-(2-methylaminoethyl)-indole has slight activity while 3-(2-N-propylaminoethyl)-indole produced no apparent symptoms.

According to pubchem, 3-(2-(Dipropylamino)ethyl)indole is DPT itself.

Also, the following:

THE COMPARISON OF THE PSYCHOTIC EFFECT OF TRYPTAMINE DERIVATIVES WITH THE EFFECTS OF MESCALINE AND LSD-25 IN SELF-EXPERIMENTS

Szara writes: "The N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and the N,N-diethyltryptamine (T-9) were obtained synthetically by the method of SPEETER AND ANTHONY."

Note that N,N-diethyltryptamine is DET itself.

So, Szara admits he used the Speeter method.
And Speeter says something about studies of a "Dr. Nolen Connor".

Did Connor just supervised the study or was he the chemist? In any way, DPT has been used since 1954 and seems like Speeter was perfectly capable of synthesizing it.

extra edit: both Merrill E. Speeter and Dr. Nolen Connor were prominent figures in The UpJohn Pharmaceutical Company.
