hi nexians!
can a/b extraction be done using a calcium Hydroxide as a base?

as long as the calcium hydroxide wont react with any reagents or equipment you are using. Make sure what you are trying to extract wont degrade at too high a pH as well.

Calcium hydroxide is not very soluble in water.

are you thinking about this kind of thing:

all is one, one is all, everything is.

Yes, but lime is not much soluble in water so your best bet would be to kneed the powdered plant material with little water and lime into a paste to freebase the alkaloids.

It is my understanding that you can use calcium hydroxide as a base in an A/B

It is true, as others said, that calcium hydroxide is not very soluble in water.

But calcium hydroxide is a strong base, so whatever of it dissolves will fully ionize irreversibly to give you a pH around 12.5.

The presence of calcium ions will also form insoluble complexes with other compounds and will precipitate them out.

Not many people have used calcium hydroxide, but you are more than willing to experiment, we got you covered.

If you do want to use calcium hydroxide then mix a good amount in your basic soup. Leave stuff to settle. That'd be undissolved calcium hydroxide and other insoluble calcium-based salts. Decant the basic soup off of the sediment and proceed to pull with your favourite non-polar solvent. Do not throw away the sediments as goodies may be trapped in there.

If you have a pH meter pelase do take a reading for reference,

Cheers,
Infun

I think that extractions with Ca(OH)2 do not require the use of an acid.
Calcium hydroxide settle in a minute, that's when you have to extract, without waiting.
Home maded CaO gives better taste then CaO buyed. If you can use a ceramic furnace you can obtain it at 1000°C for 30 minutes (cooking cycle 8 hours for 3 cm thickness of CaCO3).
The obtained OH is stronger and the better way is to use it when prepared (CaO + H2O + cal).
This system is good for Poacee, but every species requires different quantities of this base.
