Hey folks. I’m a new member here so hope I’ve posted in the right place.
I’d really love your help and opinion on something.

Whilst I’ve had some fantastic ayahuasca experiences before in South America, I had my first dmt (in theory) experience this past weekend. I’ve done a lot of reading and research into DMT before finally taking the plunge, and I’m not totally convinced what I took was dmt. I’d be eager for peoples thoughts on the below.

This product had been smoked by my friend and his friends on previous occasions, however it was getting quite old, 6 months maybe. It was different in appearance to what I’d read about. It was similar to a dull reddish brown, and was dry like a dirt or sand.

Upon my friends advice, we set the vape up with 60mg. After hitting it, the effects came pretty rapid (alike dmt). My vision became crowded with bright colours and fractals. It was visually wild. Pretty fantastic. My friend advises I was incommunicable for about 8-10 mins. Following that I could interact a bit but not much. I was interacting again after aboht 20 or so mins.

However about 40 mins later, I was still a bit ‘scattered’. This ‘scatteredness’ then slowly decreased over the next 24 hours. My memory lacked a kind of continuity that we all experience in day to day life. It was almost as if my memory, and to some extent my vision, occurred in blocks or intervals, as opposed to just a continuum. It returned to normal the following evening. I had thought that dmt was totally metabolised in around 45 mins by the body. Some effects certainly lasted to the next day. It was a little scary tbh. My first and ongoing anxious thought was ‘did I break something [in my brain’. Oddly, my friend didn’t have these experiences. He just felt as if he should have after smoking dmt.

By way of experience, many of the staple experiences of dmt didn’t occur. No beings, no gratitude, no sense of oneness with the universe, etc. I certainly remember these experiences from ayahuasca, so they have recognisable familiarity to me. It also made my tongue numb, and this numbness was still on and off the next day.

Has anyone had a similar experience?
Is there some other or additional compound that could have possibly been in the product that’s congruent with this description?
Really trying to make whatever sense of it I can, as I wouldn’t want to take the plunge again until I fully understand it.

Good quality Syrian rue (Peganum harmala) for an incredible price!

Comparing vaped to ayahuasca is a bit of a fallacy imho. Two different animals all together despite that common element.

That you had longer effects than usual, might have been the digesting of the experience, integrating of the effects, re-orientating, ...

Haha. Thanks Jees. Good call. Now sorted.

Yeah re your view, fair call, and that was my friends suggestion when we spoke the next day, but it just doesn’t feel intuitively right. There was a real physiological kind of effect still at play (esp re the mouth numbness). It was more akin to a mild cognitive imparment than anything.

Are there any other things or compounds that turn up ?
Just also found it strange that none of the most common experiences that people recall were present in mine, though I fully acceptor that anything like dmt use will be very idiosyncratic both between users, and beteeen users’ one experience and the next.

The stream of white cloud that hits my tongue can numb the tongue a bit right there on that spot, but not for hours.

If we take your friends experience then it sounds like rather normal material.
I would not discard your intuition either, good thing you're careful.

I can relate to this, my first "DMT" experience I still question whether it was DMT.

It was an orange/brown powder, sandwiched 50mg, duration was 10 minutes, 20 back to baseline.
Tons of visuals we're experienced, much empathy and a lot of what you'd expect from DMT,

But after seeing an extra tion first hand and trying it, I really started to doubt what i took the first time, everything has been consistent from extractions, and I can say those experiences visually/bodyload (nmt present in extract) and mindset was different that what I received first.

BTW, I was never told how the "DMT" I first was obtained, but I have yet to see again DMT that is both orange/brown and powder/dry.

My best advice is to be careful, trust your mind and trust your body.

This is probably a silly question, but are you sure the dull dry reddish material wasn't harmala extract that was added to the DMT (similar to changa)? Cognitive impairment is also commonly reported with moderate amounts of harmala alkaloids (particularly harmaline for some), and it increases the duration of vapourized DMT (but not for hours after...).

That's actually a very good question. Unless you've extracted the material yourself from a trusted source material (or, if you've the wherewithall, synthesised it) and, if we're going to be picky here, analysed the material in an appropriate manner, there's no way of knowing once the sample has gone.

DMT slowly darkens with age, turning first yellowish, then reddish brown. Anecdotal reports suggest that the subjective effects of aged DMT may be a little different.

We still don't appear to know much about the phenomenology of this - whether it's placebo, whether the oxidation products really do have an effect on the subjective experience, and indeed, what those oxidation products might be. For example, DMT N-oxide can cyclise to 2-MTHBC and, AFAIK, we don't know anything about the central effects of that substance.

The field acts on the observer and puts him in a privileged position vis-à-vis the universe. From this position he has access to the realities which are ordinarily hidden from us by time and space, matter and energy. This is what we call the Great Work."

I agree with downward! Damn fair question!
I’ll look into the effect of those other substances.

To downward, that’s fascinating. I wonder if I can dig up any anecdotal reports of people smoking fairly old DMT, and see what they report.

Thanks again for your thoughts folks

Anyone else noticed differences in effect between darkened/aged dmt and ‘fresher’?

Who knows... surprises do happen, especially with weird old spice you bum off a friend... I once had a 3-hour long experience (and I mean 3 hour long peak, with approximately 5 days till fully back to baseline) with immense, debiliating body load from what was supposedly changa made with nettle leaf. (That said, my brain chemistry was completely fucked by that time from candyflipping three days straight before...)

My friend was perfectly fine smoking that changa all week long, going on space trips...
Do you believe in the THIRD SUMMER OF LOVE?

Psyduckmonkey, nettles contain serotonin and possibly some other indolic stuff too. That may have interacted with your already fried state (I mean, not counting the changa. And under those kinds of circumstances things have a tendency to get weird Big grin )

I see this confusion quite a bit on the forums, and will address why Ayahuasca is completely different from smoked dmt. It all started when Western Explorers in the Amazon equated Ayahuasca completely to "orally activate dmt" and ignored the Elephant in the room, which is Caapi:

You may remember me as 69Ron. I was suspended years ago for selling bunk products under false pretenses. I try to sneak back from time to time under different names, but unfortunately, the moderators of the DMT-Nexus are infinitely smarter than I am.

If you see me at the waterpark, please say hello. I'll be the delusional 50 something in the American flag Speedo, oiling up his monster guns while responding to imaginary requests for selfies from invisible teenage girls.

Interesting, I've stumbled across the threads about 2-mthbc, but more or less overlooked them.

I also know now that it will darken with oxidation, and I susppose can be polymorphic, I still end up questioning the experience though, polymorphic or not I've still yet to have it morph into a dry, slightly grainy orange powder.

Orange goop, sure, yellow, white, orangish xtals sure. Powder that more or less looked like a finely crushed orange pill, only that once. Well twice, friend gifted me more after finding out I was trying to obtain it naturally.
