So was wondering if this could work and if this has already been asked i apologize in advance.

SWIM has made a habit of harvesting off all of his plants while still very much alive and only harvest the most potent parts and leaves the rest to continue growth. This has worked out great for pretty much all plants being harvested in this fashion (ex. when harvesting off marijuana plant only clipping a bud when it gets to full maturity instead of a whole branch leaving the rest of it to continue growth)

What i am wondering is could i harvest my San Pedro over time by just shaving or taking off small cunks? Would it shock it into being stunted? Would the chunk or slice i take off grow back or scar? is there a way of super-cropping a cactus to harvest small budding babies without fully topping the cactus? Basically the end goal is to keep a beautiful strong healthy cactus without having to cut the poor girls top half completely off?

It's possible to take the tip off the cutting and graft it back onto the mother plant. The main thing to ensure is that the central vascular bundles of the two parts overlap. Consult a cactus grafting guide for more details. So you could repeatedly take out small slices over time and end up with a cactus that looks like a stack of green cookies. Thinnest I've successfully grafted was 10mm - as a slice, not a tip, but that slice included a small sprouted stem.

Even without doing this, the plant sprouts new growing tips, often more than one.

The idea of peeling strips is intriguing and might lead to increased potency in the mother plant. The downside would be impaired aesthetics, and possibly increased risk of rot.

Frankly though, if you're fiddling around with prickly cacti you might as well just cut big bits off, then trim off the tips for subsequent rooting as cuttings. Your cactus collection will then slowly expand exponentially. Beware - this hobby can end up taking up quite a lot of space! Laughing

Grafting is strangely satisfying though, so I'd say give it a try.

“There is a way of manipulating matter and energy so as to produce what modern scientists call 'a field of force'. The field acts on the observer and puts him in a privileged position vis-à-vis the universe. From this position he has access to the realities which are ordinarily hidden from us by time and space, matter and energy. This is what we call the Great Work."

I'm missing the benefit. Knock 4 inches off the top, cut your "take section" and leave the base. Dry/plant the top = 2 cuts that grow out each year. Clean/easy/safe. I my be misunderstanding the "chunks".

Im picturing the trees you cut bows from, take a strip and the tree lives for later strip taking, but I can't see a beneficial way this could be done with cacti. Maybe I'm missing something here.

Thank you both for the swift answers.

I have tried Grafting a couple of times with Calea Zacatachichi onto Coleus, and even once grafted cannabis onto hops as an experiment. (if ur wondering it worked very well.)

i recently tried stripping the skin off the bottom of my 15inch San Pedro about a quarter inch thick strips were takin off as a test. it has left a pretty ugly scar but it seems to be returning to its original diameter.

Do you think the scar tissue would have same potency as the original tissue? Or maybe even higher potency from the stress it had to go under to recreate a protective layer?

I will post pics later when my phone is charged Big grin if this works i think this could lead to a way faster method to be able to harvest san pedro without having to wait for another cloned cutting to get big enough to be worthy of harvest.
