I've recently switched to a half conduction and half convection smoking method, since my machine just broke. See the attached picture (sizes not to scale).

As long as the DMT remains on the TOP of the wool, and you hold the flame 1-2 inches from the bottom, it is not likely you will burn the DMT. In this way, you heat the bottom through conduction, but the top through convection.
