I'll keep this simple.

Simple A/B with 3x 130 degree F naphtha defat.

I pulled 5 times with a 2g ACRB : 1ml 130 degree F naphtha ratio.

On the last pull I shook the solution very hard for exactly 2 mins.

A slight emulsion occurred but it separated out within 3 minutes.

After separation, the naphtha was very cloudy.

My guess is that it is saturated and that is why it is cloudy,.. but the first 4 pulls came out clear..?

For the first 4 pulls I gently rolled and sloshed around the solution for exactly 2 mins and then let the layers separate for exactly 2 mins. None of these came out cloudy even after cooling to room temperature.

Am I not shaking the solution hard enough for the first 4 pulls?

Should I continue pulling as I did on the 5th pull until the naphtha becomes clear?

Or is the cloudiness from something else?

If the naphtha doesn't get lost into the basic soup the your likely not mixing it enough. While we often say don't shake the mixture, it's only a real issue if there is already fat in solution to create an emulsion.

If your first pulls didn't quickly go cloudy when when they began cooling in your evap dish, it's likely they aren't saturated. My thinking is always that more mixing is better, and I'm willing to wait.

I'm not a big fan of SWIM. I mean, I've never met the guy, but any time I hear about him, he's doing something sketchy.

Awesome thanks!

I let the acidic solution settle for 1 week and decanted the resulting solution.

Then I performed a defat on the acidic solution 3 times so there definitely isn't any fat left to cause an emulsion.

I pulled 5 times so far and these pulls are freeze precipitating right now and looking great!

I think I'll pull a few more times vigorously shaking the mixture to ensure that I exhausted the solution.
