Are there any links to research papers or GPs on the nexus who can offer any advice on the safety of taking DMT whilst in the first trimester? I'm sure there are many unqualified opinions on this area in both directions but just putting it out there for a friend who has been healing herself recently and has now fallen pregnant. Not wanting to detour on her journey for this new one exclusively but more than happy to if solid medical research states otherwise.

Many thanks

Corpus Callosum is probably the best person to know, but most doctors would probably go into meltdown at the mere idea of such a question, and rightly so, IMO. Who exactly do you think is currently conducting "solid research" on pregnant women and RC's? It's hard enough getting e.g. MDMA to veterans! Research papers featuring pregnant women are anyway extremely rare, because of ethical considerations. The precautionary principle applies, especially during the first trimester when many otherwise innocuous compounds can trigger deformities and/or miscarriage. Truthfully, I struggle to imagine what kind of 'journey' you think is worth those risks?

“I sometimes marvel at how far I’ve come - blissful, even, in the knowledge that I am slowly becoming a well-evolved human being - only to have the illusion shattered by an episode of bad behaviour that contradicts the new and reinforces the old. At these junctures of self-reflection, I ask the question: “are all my years of hard work unraveling before my eyes, or am I just having an episode?” For the sake of personal growth and the pursuit of equanimity, I choose the latter and accept that, on this journey of evolution, I may not encounter just one bad day, but a group of many.”

I don't think there is any medical research on this, solid or otherwise. Personally I think it would be best to steer clear of all psychoactives when pregnant, doesn't seem worth the risk to me, and not like that other life gets a say in the matter, but that's just my view. I know of a friend however that did consume ayahuasca several times in the early stages of pregnancy without issue, and I think in some of the indigenous Amazonian tribes, women will consume ayahuasca during pregnancy and even when giving birth, or so I've heard.

Well here is a study that isnt about DMT specifically but is about Ayahuasca containing DMT: http://www.singingtotheplants.com/2012/08/new-ayahuasca-study/

The study is testing a group of Santo Daime members who are known to often give Ayahuasca to pregnant and breastfeeding women as well as small children. The study was done by the country of Brazil and because of this study Brazil made Ayahuasca legal. The study found that the group of Ayahuasca drinkers was just as healthy as the control group in every regard, and was more healthy in areas of emotional and mental health.

Since there is DMT in the Santo Daimes Ayahuasca I think it is reasonable to assume that DMT is fairly safe during pregnancy - at least in the right context.

One thing that would concern me is that you dont want to put pregnant women into too much stress during pregnancy - especially early on during the first trimester when miscarriages are more likely. 1st trimester is the most dangerous time to mess with your baby - they are so delicate in that phase. If they have already had healthy pregnancy in the past and given birth to healthy children I think there would be less risk of that being an issue, but I think waiting till after first trimester at the least would be smart..

Of course, this is a delicate issue, so before trying anything I would think long and hard about the reasons you want to try DMT during this time.... No reason to jump into danger unnecessarily and nothing is wrong with being patient for a few months till the right time for DMT comes back. In the meantime there is always meditation Wink

I did have a friend who thought that introducing her baby to different plant medicines while in the womb would be helpful - she drank San Pedro, Ayahuasca and possibly other plants during her pregnancy (her first pregnancy). She had no complications and her 3 year old is the coolest healthiest baby I know.

I would be carefull with this kind of exemple because i know women who had kids perfectly healthy even is they smoked tobacco (and not the chemical free), drunk alcohol or even took cocaine and i think nobody will say it's safe because it's not safe.

I figure it's the same guys cutting open baby's pineal glands right out of the birth canal to discover the endogenous DMT dump at birth, since 'they' have found that to ' be the case', according to (all too) many..

Yes, and according to the folks doing the baby/pineal research, kids are already full of it, they don't need DMT. In all seriousness, just curious, from what I've heard, pregnancy is a naturally psychedelic occurrence, and again, the kid's already tripping full time, so what's the need or desire? Seems like an incredibly unnecessary risk... Nature expands our consciousness wide enough at the right time to accommodate experience.

I have a very close friend who took both LSD and psilocybin, as well as cannabis during her pregnancy and her daughter is now 5, and quite intelligent for her age. If there are risks, they do not seem to have effected her.

We don't spike people, whatever their age.

I totally agree with Chan.

This whole idea is a ridiculously needless risk.

There may be exceptions to any rule. I would not be so fast to jump to a conclusion based on a single case. I could have sworn I remembered reading an article that spoke of negative birth effects from DMT. Maybe it was in rats or something; I can't remember.

keep in mind I never came to any conclusions... I simply shared a real life story, about someone I am very close with.

This topic makes people very edgy for obvious reasons, but it's good to take a step back and read each post twice. So far I don't see anyone drawing conclusions from personal observations about weather or not people should take psychedelics while pregnant. Others seem to assume that it is simply implied, because the story is told.

It's a simple observation. My friend ate acid and psilocybin while pregnant, her daughter came out just fine, is healthy, smart and get's along in the world just fine. That's it..end of story.

No one did research on this and no one knows if it's safe to do DMT while pregnant.

Everything other is a wild guess.

I would stay away from it, if I was pregnant, or if my girlfriend/wife told me she's pregnant, I would advice her to not take it.

I feel the example was used in the context of supporting the study I provided - it isnt evidence on its own of course because of small sample size. But a study coupled with a real life experience seems appropriate to me.

This is anecdotal evidence. Like people who say: "I knew a guy who smoked 2-3 packs of cigs a day, and lived up to 90!"

Objective evidence speaks against use of tobacco during pregnancy. Now if you want to gamble, that's on your own risk.

Is the Brazil study I posted also anecdotal evidence? They used a large sample size on a group who drinks Ayahuasca regularly and found out that it seems to benefit the health of that group. The group also commonly drinks Ayahuasca while pregnant, breast feeding, and at young ages. It's a well done study from what I can tell. Seems pretty objective to me....

Here is the study again in case it was hard for you to see before:

Since the study shows increased mental and emotional health you could even say it is a gamble not giving your child Ayahuasca Wink

Before your first post in this thread, it was of my opinion that oral DMT would NOT present any danger to a developing fetus. Smoking DMT may, because one is inhaling alot more than dimethyltrypamine. But I don't not want to voice that opinion because I do not have anything but Dr. Stassman's belief that DMT is released at the 49th day of development and during vaginal delivery. It is the 49th day of fetal developmemt that Strassman bleieve that the human receives conscoiusness(soul).

I cannot see how unadultered dmt could possible be harmful as safe doses for the mother. But then again, it is only on opinion. But it is an opinion that I carry with conviction.

So, thank you travsha for posting that study.

I'm not aware of any specific studies on the use of DMT in the first trimester of pregnancy but, embryologically speaking, the umbilical artery is present along with its corresponding veins by 8 weeks gestation. Murine and ovine (rodents and sheep) studies have been done on the placental/fetal circulation and these have shown a vasoconstricting effect produced by agonists at the 5HT2a receptor. Clearly, transposing these findings to humans directly is fraught with speculation, but it does give some food for thought, potentially.
I am paranoid of my brain. It thinks all the time, even when I'm asleep. My thoughts assail me. Murderous lechers they are. Thought is the assassin of thought. Like a man stabbing himself with one hand while the other hand tries to stop the blade. Like an explosion that destroys the detonator. I am paranoid of my brain. It makes me unsettled and ill at ease. Makes me chase my tail, freezes my eyes and shuts me down. Watches me. Eats my head. It destroys me.

You cannot state that jamie. You do not know how she would have been if her mother had not taken any entheogen since there is no control group.

Also a study with a sample-size of one is not enough data to make any conclusion.
