Hey!
Long time lurker here! I've been reading this forum for several years now, but I haven't postet enough to be able to access the other areas of the forum. So I decided to post my question here. I hope that is ok =)

I've got a lovely patch of Phalaris bracystachys growing outside on my terrace.
They have gotten to the size that I believe is perfect harvest size.
Some of them have started developing flowers, but most of them have not.

My problem is that I'm in the middle of a lot of things at the momemt, that makes me unable to perform an extraction for at least 4 more weeks.
My question then is, can I harvest the phalaris now and freeze it, and in a month do an extraction?
If so, should I dry before freezing or not?
I was planning on using a juicer to squeeze out the liquid from the grass, and thats going to be hard if I dry it.

Live plants. Sustainable, ethically sourced, native American owned.

Hello, I can not say for sure (no actual experience), but my guess is:
Yes you can freeze them and wait, or harvest some, freeze, let it grow some more, harvest again and combine in freezer..
No point in drying them first, might even destroy some goddies from what I read.

What I do know is that after freezing, thawing and freezing repeatedly will break down the grass "structure", if this is better for when using a juicer I dont know, but it will make it easier to make juice with a little water and an electric cutting device (grass beeing still kinda frozen).

Im a total noob at extractions so this is all advice I have. I would say freeze fresh and dont dry. Smile

Also:
Cool seeing others giving brachystachys a try! I have some myself, but not that many. So im currently looking more into making a brew of some sort. From my experience you can expect a lot of seeds, so if this grass works out for you, you will have plenty more to play with/grow.

Looking forward to read more about your research, when the time comes (:

EDIT: Found this while searching this forum:
Quote:
SWIM said this about that : I have been successfully extracting Phalaris A. cv. "Big Medicine" for awhile. Johnny Appleseed tested (GC/MS) many strains of Phalaris from all over the world and found the "Big Medicine" strain to be the highest in DMT while not containing even a trace of Gramine. While testing these different strains he also learned alot more about the variability of alkaloid content. Most important is do not freeze the plant material. The extraction should be done with freshly harvested material only. Freezing reduces the alkaloid level by up to 80%. (..)

a little bit more info.

So I really dont know, guess there is still some research to be done with these plants..

Good thing I decided to check my post just now!
I was about to harvest and put in the freezer just now!

I guess I'll just have to let it grow until I have time to do an extraction.
