I'm preparing a brew using 20g Acacia confusa root bark. I decanted the first boil and decided to stick it right into the freezer so I could decant out the sludge and add it back to the bark powder for further extraction.
Within a few minutes of being in the freezer, the liquid changed from a clear deep reddish-brown color to a milky pinkish-brown. With a little more time, a light colored precipitate was clearly falling out of solution.
I let it freeze and thaw, added a few drops of lemon juice, and mixed it. The precipitate is still present and it actually crashes out even quicker now, leaving a clear reddish-brown supernatant layer.
Before freezing, there was a minimal amount of dark colored sediment. Now there is significant amount of fluffy pinkish-brown sediment.
Is this normal? Is the precipitate just tannins or is it DMT? I know that it shouldn't be DMT since the water should be acidic due to the lemon juice, but I didn't expect such a large amount to precipitate out after freezing. And does this precipitate contain a significant amounts of actives or will I be okay if I just get rid of it?
Maay-yo-naze!
