dreaming occurs during REM sleep, you dont dream in deep sleep. thats why if (well at least my experience) you take a sedative before sleeping you dont dream. well even when i dont take something before bed i might not sleep. well heres a tip, that works every time for me. every night i have vivid dreams when i do this. simply dont have any sex for 3 hours before you go to sleep. when you orgasm you get naturally sedated, this makes REM sleep very short, hence not always having vivid dreams. if you dont, or at least for me, i have very vivid dreams.
just my theory though. may not be the same for everyone

I'd say that it seems like practically the opposite for me at times. If I have an orgasm shortly before going to sleep, I often have some frustrating sexual dreams that night. "Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind" - Albert Einstein

The more sober i am when i sleep, the more profound/intense/vivid my dreams are. And the recollection is much better as well. Smoking herb before bed kills my dreaming. If i don't smoke for like 2-3 hrs prior to going to bed I have crazy dreams every night. Coinci-Transcendentalism

I'd like to comment on that as well. Smoking marijuana doesn't seem to interfere much with my dreaming. I've been a chronic marijuana smoker for 5 years now (missing some days here or there), but I have vivid dreams regularly as I did before doing any drugs. If anything, my dreams can seem more intense and vivid when I go to bed high. From the sounds of it, many others won't agree with me here at all based on their experiences, but figured I'd throw my two cents in on that one. "Science without religion is lame.
