Hey guys I need help if possible,

Looking for a positive or negative ID if this is illinoensis.

Pictures:

However, in my area we have this,
The Problem:

That's more that 3ft tall. We have trees with same leaf structure. How can I tell desmanthus species apart? Any help would be appreciated. The little ones I found only in sunlight. By the river, but not on the other side of the bridge where a lot of trees were, shady all day.

Help?

Also, thanks =)

i'm just an amateur but i'd guess desmanthus illinoensis off hand. i only say that b/c it's tall compared to the lower to the ground leptobolus.

here is a side by side comparison of the 2 on keeper trouts website; great guy that guy.

What about how to differentiate between a small desmanthus tree species and a small desmanthus shrub/bush (?) species? I want to make sure that I don't mistakenly harvest some/all the wrong species.

Also, thanks for the reply!

leptobolus seeds are elongated, the flowers, roots, seeds, and seed pods are different. the link i gave you was page 2 of a multiple page document about differentiating between the 2 any more info i'd give you would be straight from that or more googling.

but after reading (i'm going to harvest some soon too), the main thing i'm going to be looking for is the elongated seeds. that is if the seed pods haven't already fallen off

Hey sorry maybe unclear. I know that it is not Leptobolus. But in my area (VA) we have trees, as in 30 ft tall, with the same leaf structure. I don't know if what I am finding are grown 3ft illinoensis, or baby 3ft versions of the big ones.

So I did some more research and found out the name of one of the problems. Albizia Jalrussin (sp?) the silk tree. So to update my question: How to differentiate between a 3ft tall illinoensis, and a 3ft tall silk tree. Once they start flowering Ill be able to tell, but thats not for a while. So any other signs I could look for?

Thanks =D
