So I use an iPhone. And I browse this site everyday at work, quite a lot. My phone displays this forum wonderfully but I having to scroll horizontally to read posts is sometimes a pain. I also cannot attach pictures using my phone. Now this is all very minor it would be easier on a smartphone like an android or iPhone if there were an app that formatted it differently for the smaller screens. Now I know this isn't an urgent idea, just curious if anyone has the ability to do this like The traveller or if this is even anything anyone else would be interested in having.

Also I haven't been in chat at all nor do I know if it works on iPhone. But if it doesn't adding that capability my be a cool addition as well. What are everyone else's thoughts on these ideas?

Would like to add I have no knowledge o how to do any of this.

Android is gaining popularity over Apple, so make one for Android too!!... I could help, I know a bit of c++.

The other thing I notice I cannot do is copy txt that is in a post. Would be easier if I only wanted to quote a small section of a very large post. Usually on websites I can copy any txt by tapping and then expanding the selection tool over the text I wish to copy. But for some reason on this site it doesn't work at all

You guys realize how much programming is required for this, right? Plus updates, support, etc. Plus, Apple would never approve this in the App Store, nor Google in the Android market (drug related content).

Why not just use the "mobile view" option and save poor Trav some time?

I asked this a while back. Some forums use the app tapatalk that makes everything the correct size. A1pha makes a good point about the content of the site though. The mobile view has been working pretty ok the majority of the time on my iphone.

Ive seen some pretty raunchy apps out there in the app markets. Also the programing isnt to bad, All we need is to use a preexisting Java source code. And tweek it for use with DMT-nexus. When doing programing you dont have to re invent the wheel. Its doable, And I'd be happy to help.

It's not a matter of just finding an existing application or using standard components to achieve the functionality. It's the heavy modifications and support cycle that also comes with developing an app. And you need to maintain at least two different versions: one for android and one for iphone.

Unless you're developing those things for a living, you're not going to whip one out in a night. You're going to have to learn to work with Android / iOS, learn their APIs, their application lifecycle and then write your application and maintain.

I like the idea though. If you really insist on such a thing, you could always develop an unofficial app that works via side-loading on Android.

I have experience with the Android API, its what im going to school for Im down for this idea, I think a lot of people will like it.

Looks fine on my HTC android in landscape.

No side scrolling required, though it does mean I'm reading more and posting shorter.

The app doesn't have to be supported by apple I thought? I have seen iPhone apps that are downloaded via a website and not found on iTunes. Am I wrong?

Also I don't get the option to view this sites mobile version. Is it not available for iPhone or am I missing something?

I think it is admirable that you are willing to spend the time and effort to do this. Realize, however, that doing so would require the disclosure of certain functions and bits of code kept private. I, for one, feel comfortable here at the DMT-Nexus because there is one person at the helm managing the code in its entirety.

In my opinion, the mobile view of the DMT-Nexus is the perfect solution.

1) The code remains in the hands of The Traveler.
2) No additional time or money is required to maintain it. No Apple. No Google.
3) No third party! Who knows what sort of data Apple and Google collect on their own.

I think the question here is, what additional benefits would an app bring to the users? Seems all bad to me.

Yes, if you jailbreak your iPhone. Most people don't want to do that.

If the nexus went through with it what would you need to make it reality?

Why make an 'app' that only works on one type of device, and then another one to make it work on another type of device?

We have something universal for this, that works on all devices and that is called a web browser.

When I have some time again I will work on an improved mobile version, making a mobile app might sound like fun but is actually a lot of unneeded work.

Just 'reusing' some code might work in a wet coding dream but not in reality where you have to actually make an advanced app. It's not only the app that has to be created for this, but also the server side, the data has to come from somewhere no?

Think about credentials, security, encryption, etc. It really is A LOT of work to make this in a good way.

I guess I will have to stick with the normal view. Not a big deal although I do believe the mobile version needs some work. It really should have its own UI cause smashing the original down to fit it horizontally just looks terrible.

YouTube's mobile design is pretty decent. All the buttons For the site should all be accessible via some sort of bar that never goes away or that can be brought up. Allows more room for the post and info about the poster, name join date number of posts ect
