OK so I need a little insight on my prep method.

I've been rolling up a small ball of steel wool and melting the spice into it before putting it into the VG.

I've heard you should heat up the wool over a flame until it stops smoking to remove any excess machine oil. I tried this but either I get no smoke or anything, or I get spontaneous combustion lol. Should I assume that what I have is clean enough for use?

Also, should I be pre melting my spice onto a ball of the wool or should I sprinkle it on a flatter 'ball' of wool?
