I have always liked meditation but i really want to get a little more serious about it. While silence is always best its not always the easiest thing to come by, I was wonderig if anybody had reccomendations on good meditation music or sounds? I really like psycadelic music such as Ozric Tentacles, Shpongle and OTT, but that music is usually too intense and busy for meditating. Also I have tried the binureal (or however thats spelled) beats with good headphones, I really like this concept but it just wanst quite cutting it. The stuff i listened too had sub par sound quality, and sometimes some of the flutes and stuff in it are distracting. Also i have tried guided meditation, maybe I just havnt found the right one but it doesnt seem to work for me. So i was wondering if anybody could reccomend some good sound to guide me.

Also, to aid me in meditation I have a jar of ocean water that my mom collected during a full moon, black quartz and a very clear quarts crystal. As far as the quartz crystals go i usually just hold them but im sure there are better ways to use them that im not aware of. I also really like to smudge with sage wich is an americna indian tradition but im not very familiar with the specific ceromonies or anything. I kinda just do what feel right with it.

The didgeridoo is an awesome aid to meditation, almost instantly puts me in a relaxed and calm state.

I know i dont need any of this stuff, really i could just sit anywhere and close my eyes and meditate but these things do seem to help. The best meditation for me is to go on a good hike in the woods, and either find a good view on top of a cliff or a nice spot by a rushing river. The sound of flowing water really takes me away and drowns out my other thoughts.

Anyway, to summarize, I would like reccomendations on good soudns or music. Also I would like to know how others use crystals and things like that to aid meditation. If anybody is familiar with traditional native american prayers or anything I would like to learn more about that. Also I would like to learn about the chakras and meditation practices regarding them. Any tips or comments would be appreciated.

Perfect music/sounds for meditation imho. I enjoy it over most other music whilst tripping as well, but ymmv.
"let those who have talked to the elves, find each other and band together" -TMK

In a society in which nearly everybody is dominated by somebody else's mind or by a disembodied mind, it becomes increasingly difficult to learn the truth about the activities of governments and corporations, about the quality or value of products, or about the health of one's own place and economy.
In such a society, also, our private economies will depend less upon the private ownership of real, usable property, and more upon property that is institutional and abstract, beyond individual control, such as money, insurance policies, certificates of deposit, stocks, etc. And as our private economies become more abstract, the mutual, free helps and pleasures of family and community life will be supplanted by a kind of displaced citizenship and by commerce with impersonal and self-interested suppliers...
The great enemy of freedom is the alignment of political power with wealth. This alignment destroys the commonwealth - that is, the natural wealth of localities and the local economies of household, neighborhood, and community - and so destroys democracy, of which the commonwealth is the foundation and practical means.” - Wendell Berry

Ambient music can help alot, there are also certain frequencies that can help with meditation. Maybe youtube search "meditation frequency" can bring some results.

I was reading a bit about that in the binural beats thread. I have some of that on my ipod its called Hemi-Sync i beleive. it has the slightly differnt tones playing in each ear, and if you only listen to one of the tones its flat but when you have both playing in your headphones it makes the WAWAWAWA sound. This is really cool stuff and im very intersted in it but the Hemi-Sync i had wasnt cutting it. Now that I read that thread I see it may be that I was listening on my ipod with sub par sound quality, but it also seemed like some of the other sounds in it were distracting, and it was guided also, i have a hard time with that. So i spose i need to get a portable cd player and give it a try. Does anybody know of any Binaural beats type meditation music to reccomend?

Also id like to learn more about traditional native american prayers and ceromonies but it is hard to find information on that (especially for a white guy like me lol).

Try searching "solfeggio" or "solfeggio frequency" on youtube, maybe you'll like some of them. Also native american flute music is great for meditation. I meditate rarely, but I find that music helps alot to get into "slower state".

For native american sounds check out Din'e (navaho) singer Louie Gonnie. "Sacred Mountains" is amazing and is probably his most meditative cd. A lot of his other music is NAC peyote songs which are good but I have a hard time warming to the rapid drumming. Also give Carlos Nakai a listen. His latest is "Dancing Into Silence" and is incredible with (or withoutSmile ) ayahuasca.

I really haven't tried to meditate to sound but thought Jonathan Goldman might be a good choice for that. He's got a bunch of full length recordings on youtube. Good Luck.

thanks for the reccomendations everybody, ill have to look into them when i get a chance. Funny thing happened, same day i posted here that i wanted to learn more about traditional native american prayer and stuff i met my neighbors for the first time. I have heard drumming and chanting coming from their garage before, so maybe they can point me in the right direction. Things like that make me feel like in the flow, like a confirmation that im on the right path.
