Does anyone know if there is a way to check product quality of home grown shrooms. I don't have access to NMR or spectroscopy. Iv been reading up on it and i know that if the initial rice cake has any funny colors in it throw it out. I was just looking for a way to check the final product for harmful mold or bacteria.

Any mold or bacteria you can smell very easily if you can't see it...and usually shrooms won't fruit on moldy cakes...but be careful smelling. whiff lite.some people have hurt themselves by breathing in nasty bacteria...

The dreaded rottten aple smell because it's very hard to see and very hard to get rid of

Another thing....my friends usually overcook the cakes a bit just to make sure there is no contam...then right after colonization is achieved and before fruiting the cakes are dunked in sterilized water for about 10-20 minutes...
