This weekend I saw an astonishing movie that its all about meaning of life and phylosophycal dialogs among very different characters. its rotoscopícally animated and its one of the best movies I have ever seen. I really recommend it! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waking_Lifeim sure you will find your counterpart on one of the many characters! I am with those man who own that particular kind of courage of the interior voyager.

Richard Linklater is responsible for that, his other movies are good too
I can reccomend A scanner Darkly , written by K.dick , but adapted and directed by linklater ,and rotocscoped
Also Slacker ,by him , is good . Like a Prototype to Waking life

Waking Life is a fabulous film, and not recognized nearly as much as it should be. It's like My Dinner with Andre with a bigger cast and groovy visuals. Thanks for posting about it; I will have to dig it out of my cd collection for another watch.

The Man From Earth has a vibe like those 2 films too for those interested.

Just got blown away by this movie. Loved the rotoscoping, and like you said caliwa, I will definitely benefit from a revisit to the ideas raised. Here is a fairly comprehensive and in-depth review of the characters and philosophies: http://publish.uwo.ca/~dmann/waking_essay.htm
What struck me in particular was the last dialogue, which is actually Linklater himself speaking to the main character. Really highlights the idea of the kind of eternal recurrence that psychedelics always make me feel in my bones. The idea that there is only the *now* seems to be understood in certain strains of Hinduism and Buddhism, but somehow it seems most obvious to me under the influence of certain chemicals. In any case, Linklater's Phillip K. Dick story, his dream, and the way he's just playing the pinball machine and living his philosophy is beautifully done. "Just-- wake up!" I'm an unabashed Alan Watts fanboy so all this Western-interpreted Eastern mysticism gives me chills. ![Laughing](/forum/images/emoticons/laughing.png) Man, he would have fit in perfectly in this movie!

I am DLing this now, from the replies it seems it will be interesting. I just watched this movie today actually. It blew my mind! Highly recommended! I'm going to have to watch it again and pay more attention to dialogue as I continually found myself zoned into all the pretty animation and weird things going on in the background. This, what I'm experiencing now, is a whole new level of my being.

Ha, it took me several watches to actual realize what everyone was saying, and it is a fun blend of many topics that psychedelics seem to illuminate. Those visuals are just way too entrancing.

this is the first movie that touched and changed me. saw it when i was about 18/19 and was pretty introverted. that changed afterwards. i was prettty young and didnt understand (translation) everything but the images and what i understood were such an experience that i had a real little revelation in me. went extroverted and changed my surroundings (friends, hobbys and so on) accordingly for good. this movie really converted me for good. i had only two similar experiences with movies in my life (weaker though). a few years after i watched it the first time i rewatched it (on acid) and understood everything. it brought up really great memories of my life before and the new life. i was really happy that day. of course it wont have this effect for all people :-) but perhaps you can take oone or two things out of it. and if you like goa music you will probably know a little bit of it out of samples in goa trakcs :-) Avatar: 1877 pierre auguste renoir model: jeanne samary gimped by Combin

I've been a massive fan of this movie since I first watched it when it came out. Its not very often I watch something that really makes me think. If you enjoyed the weird rotoscoping animation, make sure you check out A Scanner Darkly. This uses a more up-to-date technique and is a good watch for anybody into psychedelics and/or Philip K Dick.

Richard Linklater is one of the strange cases of Lucidity On Film, with enough balls and coherence to address topics not encouraged by the industry, in feasible ways. Just take a look on his filmography. The guy deserves the utmost respect. I work in the business and know how difficult it is to walk the line he walks, and stay on the job. Oh yeah... saw it in the theater (nearly empty), bought the DVD twice. It is one of those films that I would loan out or give a copy to people, and then they would go out and buy it to give to others. I think it is probably at least as popular now as when it came out in what... 2001? Anyway, what's not to love? Lucid dreaming, esoteric philosophy, tripper rants, cosmic connundrums etc. etc. Pretty muych all of the little monologues are actually given by the people themselves... mostly people from Austin, TX (where Linklater is from). Real philosophy professors, Caveh Zahedi... and of course Alex Jones about to burst. Heheheheh. A Scanner Darkly was great, and most Linklater films are worth seeing. Even the somewhat sappy romance duology of Before Sunrise & Before Sunset (Ethan Hawke & Julie Delphy reprise their roles in those films in Waking Life) were a step above the typical Rom-Coms of their day. Movies like Waking Life are rare gems because they don't fit the mold of a typical film. It breaks nearly every rule in screenwriting, has only a rudimentary plot that is mostly hanging on the progressive mood of the film, it is filled with monologues, the main character is mostly just along for the ride... a wonder it was ever made. Wonderful that is. I love how the girl he meets on the subway stairs responds when he tells her she might be a character in his dream... I've had characters respond that way in my lucid dreams as well. It is amazing how often things from this film come up in conversations, even when the person hasn't seen the film. The mark of a truly classic film. "Curiouser and curiouser..." ~ Alice
"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it." ~ Buddha
